Report of the Committee constituted to examine the practice on funding of international

conferences for faculty members

Director, IIM Indore had vide his mail dated March 24, 2013 constituted a committee
comprising Dean (Administration), Chair (FPM), Prof. Vikas Goyal, Prof. Kajari Mukherjee and
Prof. Subhasankar Chattopadhyay to review the existing policy of funding for international
conferences for faculty members.

The committee met on 2nd April and deliberated over the existing policy. The committee also
examined the policies of IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad and 11M Kozhikode.

The committee wrote a mail to all Area Chairpersons requesting them to discuss the issue in
their respective areas. The areas were requested to categorize the conferences related to
their domain as A, B and C / Other category respectively (with A category being the most
prestigious and so on).

Findings of the Committee

Subsequent to the discussions and deliberations the committee noted the following,

A. Existing policy and Comparison with some other Ms: The committee is of the view
that while funding for conferences is a privilege being accorded by the institute to
faculty members it cannot be treated as an entitlement. It appears that the policy of
IIM Indore is very similar to that of NM Calcutta. The existing policy of IIM Indore is
more liberal than the policies of IIM Ahmedabad and 11M Kozhikode.

B. Categorization of conferences: Based on the inputs received from the various areas
the conferences can be categorized as A, B and Other category respectively. The area-
wise categorization is in Annexure 1.

C. Overlaps among areas: It is likely that there will be some overlaps in the conference
listing provided by areas since several conferences are multi-disciplinary and hence
accept papers from different areas. For instance, the Annual Academy of Management
meeting is likely to appear in both OB as well as Strategic Management domain.

D. Nationally reputed conferences: In some areas nationally reputed conferences also

appear in the list. For instance certain areas chose to categorize conferences
organized by institutes of National importance like the Ilst, IlsM, ISB, MSc etc. as
International conferences.

Recommendations

Based on the findings the committee concludes and recommends the following,

I. The committee proposes the categorization of conferences as per Annexure - I.

II. The institute may consider getting the Conference categorization vetted by a panel of
external experts representing all the academic areas.

III. Based on the categorization the committee proposes the following funding
a. Category A: Continue the existing policy of full funding for 1 international
conference a year.
b. Category B: Provide 75% of the funding for 1 international conference a year.
c. Other category: Provide 50% of the funding for 1 international conference a
year.

IV. Conferences organized by institutes of National importance: The committee

proposes to continue the existing practice of providing full funding for conferences
being organized by institutes of national importance, within India.

V. Multi-disciplinary conferences: Faculty members may send their papers to

conferences that are not from their own functional area. For instance, the British
Academy of Management is an A-rated conference in the SM area; however faculty
members from OB & HRM also send their papers to this conference. The committee
proposes that papers thus accepted may be considered based on their categorization,
irrespective of whether the faculty member is affiliated to the functional area or not.

VI. Special area conferences - not listed: It is possible that some faculty members may
send papers to special area conferences that are not listed by any area. In such cases,
the Director may take an appropriate decision about the categorization and funding.

VII. Director's discretion: Since conference funding is not an entitlement the committee
also proposes that the Director's should have the final discretion in approving funding
for conferences depending on the merits of the case.
