Convergence of SAFADs Finest

Design Awards Week. The most awaited event of every students in School of Architecture,
Fine Arts and Design (SAFAD) where outstanding students were given recognition for their hard
work and effort on school. With this years theme Convergence: the act of converging and specially
moving toward union or uniformity, SAFAD was trying to encourage every student to step up and
strive for greatness to compete with international standards.

Unlike in the previous years, the event was held at Ayala Center Cebus atrium. This years
18th annual Design Awards and Exhibit was held on Robinsons Galleria Cebus main atrium.
Though the venue is good and new, most students have some difficulty going because of the
distance from school. The event runs from March 7 to 11. Masterpiece of different student from
architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, painting, advertising arts and fashion design
were displayed at the center of the malls atrium. Those work of art that in the exhibit were
handpicked by the instructors to be recognized by the public to show how creative SAFAD
students are.

The event started with an opening ceremony with a welcoming speech by SAFADs Dean
Ar. Michael Joseph Espina, FUAP and was then followed inspirational talk delivered by Dr.
Ramon del Fierro. Deans lists from 1st year to 5th year was then recognized. An intermission from
Cebu pop contestant and SAFAD very own cheerdance group Cheerios was being performed to
entertain the audience. Some delays and small mishaps of the performances didnt bother the
crowd and they pretty much enjoyed what they were seeing. The highlight of the ceremony is the
Quatro Fashion Show by the graduating SAFAD Fashion Design students showing their avant
garde designs. The audiences were in awe upon seeing such design that were new and somewhat
weird to them. The designs were like made to be in a battle field but still it is outstanding. It
showcase the creativity of the students. The ceremony was ended with a closing remarks by Ms.
AJ Culbira and the ribbon cutting of the exhibit.
On the third day of the weeklong event was Lantawans recognition of advertisers and
competitions. It was opened with a speech by Bro. Bela Lanyi, Architecture Department Head and
Lantawans Editor-in-Chief. He first time introduced the Lantawan magazine 2016 issue to the
public. He also gave a brief review on how the magazine started and give glimps of its first issues.
It was then followed with a preview of the Lantawan magazine presented by Ar. Adrian Yap. An
inspirational talk was then delivered Ar. Omar Maxwell Espina. After all those speeches delivered,
the recognition of the magazine sponsors was then recognized. Simultaneously, competitions was
also being held that was participated by architecture students for spaghetti design, landscape
architecture students for miniature garden and interior design students for flower arrangement. The
event ended with a raffle draw with some lucky students won drafting materials as price. Cocktail
was also served for the guests and organizers of the event.

The last day of the event was the most awaited day of the weeklong event. It is the awarding
ceremony of those who were nominated for the design awards. The ceremony kick off with a
welcome remarks from Ar. Ryan Cabanlit and an inspirational talk by Fr. Salas. The awarding of
the winners of the previous days competition came in first. Next is the intense intermission
performance from pop jazz group that was a blast! The crowd wowed with their performance and
brought hype to the students. Cheers and screams from pals are being raised when the awarding of
the design ceremony started. The hosts of the event even make the momentum more thrill by
making a long pause every after a winner was called on stage. The ceremony ended with a fashion
show presentation by the non-graduating fashion design students. Audience again wowed by the
presentation of different fashion in time which they bring back to life the style of Gothic,
Renaissance, Romanesque and more.

This event is not just having a weeklong effect for the students but it encourages them to
work harder and do their very best. This event boosts the students persistence to be more creative
and strive for greatness. This is what the events theme convergence wants to express. It wants the
student to push themselves harder to be more competitive and be prepared for the challenges it
may face in the future.
