In some cases the horoscopes contain a series of aspects that form one or more
configurations. These configurations represent a powerful energy force which can be
advantageous or detrimental according to the aspects involved. Some of the
configurations formed by major aspects are :
The T- Square
The Grand Cross
The Grand Trine
The Stellium
The Yod
The T -Square
This type of configuration occurs when two planets oppose each other and both are
squared by a third planet. The T-square is a difficult combination of aspects as it indicates
the need to overcome many obstacles, but at the same time, it produces a strong driving
ambition to do so. The tension and awareness created by the two planets in opposition
must be resolved by the planet receiving the double square. This third planet becomes a
focal point of much importance in your chart. The T-square causes a lot of difficulty in the
life but they also spark action and the drive necessary to achieve. Living with the
demands of a T-square can be very challenging, but when the energy of this configuration
is well-directed by a mature individual, it often leads to significant accomplishments. The
T-square is an impetus to success that many famous people have.
A Grand Trine occurs when three planets are placed an equal distant apart, approximately
120 from each other. This is less common than the T-Square but is much more beneficial
in its effects. This configuration suggests that you have earned some special advantages
to be enjoyed in this life. The trines indicate a harmonious flow of energy and potential
for creative self-expression. Sometimes, however, the Grand Trine confers too much
stability and leads to inertia and a lack of motivation to dynamic action. Many with Grand
Trines do not accomplish as much as they could and should in life, simply because the
easy flow of events does not necessarily stimulate to achievement and ambition.
The Yod
A Yod occurs when two planets in sextile (60 apart) and both form an inconjunct (a 150
angle) with a third planet. The third planet in the inconjunct represents the action point of
the Yod; the mid point between the other two planets is the reaction point. This is also
referred to as the Finger of God or the Finger of Fate and is an uncommon
configuration. The configuration is usually troublesome and difficult to handle during
childhood but can develop into an ingenious force in later period. This configuration is
often foudn in the charts of spritual persons of repute.
The Stellium
A Stellium is a configuration that occurs when three or more planets are in the same sign
or are in the same house. To be truly significant, a stellium should have four or more
planets involved. This places much focus upon the affairs ruled by this house and the
tendencies shown by the sign involved. Strong will power, self-awareness, and a direct
stimulation to action will be shown in these affairs.
Disassociated Aspects
When planets are placed at the very beginning or at the very end of a sign, they
sometimes form aspects which do not adhere to the specific formula of compatible or
incompatible signs. This is called as disassociated aspects.

Aspect Configurations
It is not uncommon for horoscopes to contain a series of aspects that form one or more
configurations. While it is difficult to state exactly what the result of these compound
aspects may be, in a general sense we can speculate. Several of configurations formed by
major aspects are the T-Square, the Grand Cross, the Grand Trine, a Stellium, and the
Yod.
The T Square
This configuration occurs when Two planets oppose each other and both are squared by a
third planet. The T-square is a difficult combination of aspects as it indicates the need to
overcome many obstacles, but at the same time, it produces a strong driving ambition to
do so. The tension and awareness created by two planets in opposition must be resolved
by the planet receiving the double square. This third planet becomes a focal point of
much importance in your chart.
In all cases:
The T-square causes a lot of difficulty in the life but they also spark action and the drive
necessary to achieve. Living with the demands of a T-square can be very challenging, but
when the energy of this configuration is well-directed by a mature individual, it often
leads to significant accomplishments. The T-square is an impetus to success that many
famous people have.
In all cases:
The Grand Cross is very rare. It characterizes an individual who should be concerned
with people and personal or intimate relationships, rather than criticism, ideals, and
values. It is hard for you to avoid spilling your energies in diverse and related directions.
Many obstacles will interfere with the realization of goals.
The Stellium
A Stellium is a configuration that occurs when three or more planets are in the same sign
or are in the same house. To be truly significant, a stellium should have four or more
planets involved. This places much focus upon the affairs ruled by this house and/or the
tendencies shown by the sign involved. Strong will power, self-awareness, and a direct
stimulation to action will be shown in these affairs.
The Yod
A Yod occurs when two planets in sextile (60 apart) both form an inconjunct (a 150
angle) with a third planet. The third planet in the inconjunct represents the action point of
the Yod; the mid point between the other two planets is the reaction point. The action
point of the configuration is sometimes called the "finger of God," and the finger formed
by the two inconjuncts points to a place in your chart likely to be very active. The Yod is
believed by many astrologers to be a karmic configuration, and it suggests that there is a
compulsive "debt" repayment associated with the area of the chart pointed out.

WHAT IS A T-SQUARE OR T-CROSS?
If you are looking at a Natal Chart that I wrote for you, the
T-SQUARE in the middle of your Chart Wheel will be the
color RED for the square lines and the color GREEN for the
opposition lines. In the picture to the right, the longest line
running through the middle of the chart will be GREEN for
the opposition line in the charts that I write for you instead
of RED that you see to the right.
View the 2 T-Square's in: Martha Stewart's Chart below. The other side of the T-
Square is Jupiter in Gemini in the 8th house. It's saying, "USE YOUR JUPITER IN
GEMINI IN YOUR 8TH HOUSE OF OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY!" Interestingly enough,
Martha Stewart's company is called "Omni-Media." Media is ruled by the sign of
Gemini and Omni means "all or everywhere." Omni is a Jupiter rulership because
Jupiter is the most expansive and abundant planet in our Solar System and seeks to
take up a lot of space, in space. It makes me wonder if she had an astrologer help her
with this name or did she migrate to this name herself. Either way, it is what it is,
and as it turn's out . . she used the energy negatively . . but she will recover and
eventually use it positively.
Both square and opposition aspects are supposed to be stressful aspects, which can
panic the neophytes in astrology when they see they have a T-Square in their natal
chart. This is a frequent chart aspect in most successful people. And most successful
people can tell you that their success has had its ups and downs, yet they keep moving
toward their intended goal. Would you believe Oprah Winfrey has a T-Square? When
you think of the challenges she has openly admitted to the world, it makes perfect
sense. T-Squares give a person experience, wisdom and character.
Therefore, you will more than likely see T-Square's in the natal charts of CEO's,
leaders, famous or creative people because there is nothing that would stop them from
attaining their goal. And because of the challenges they experienced, this makes them
all the more successful since the focus was brought about by the T-Square.
Having a T-Square is like driving a car with 3 wheels. It's obvious you're only driving
with 3 wheels so identifying and fixing the problem is fairly easy. If you drove a car
with three wheels, you'd have a fairly Good idea what to do in order to fix the car
and make it driveable.
So which point do you look at to identify the problem? Look to the planet that is at
the 90 degree angle and then look directly across to the other side of the chart and
THAT is the point focus. What planet is there and what sign is it in? If there is no
planet there, then look at that particular house to see what the house focus is. Then
focus on the house rulerships for the answer to any problems.
If a "singleton" planet is involved, then this is the point focus. A "singleton" planet is
one that is sitting by itself and away from any other planets, yet it is involved in the
T-Square.
You can also look to see where there is emptiness. A T-Square is really a Grand Cross
with a planet missing on the other side. Look to see what is on the opposite side of the
chart that is not part of the T-Square and see what sign is over there. There's a clue
right there. Look to the house position, the sign that is represented there and any
planets involved.
Aspect Patterns
Grand Trines | T-Squares | Grand Squares | Yods
What is an Aspect Pattern?
When several aspects occur in the same chart (or simultaneously), they can create larger
aspect patterns. Instead of one aspect, several planets in aspect can create a larger aspect
pattern. These larger patterns can signify a complex personality pattern, referred to by
psychologists as "complexes".
Aspect patterns have a major influence on your personality and character by creating greater
ease or resistance. They can also be set off and stepped up by transiting and progressed
planets. A natal trine may become a Grand Trine whenever a third planet enters the part of
the zodiac that trines both planets already in trine. A T-Square can become a Grand Square,
and a sextile can become a Yod. This can also happen in relation to other people and their
planets can form larger aspect patterns with yours. Having these aspects together can create
feelings of immediate rapport and significant relationship dynamics or something you are both
attracted to work on or understand.
Grand Trines
When 2 planets make a trine (120 degree angle), and there is a 3rd planet that also makes
trines to both planets, this triangle is called a Grand Trine. Imagine a planet at 0 degrees
Aries, another at 0 Leo and a 3rd at 0 Sagittarius, and this is a Grand Trine. The 3 planets that
make up a Grand Trine are usually in the same ELEMENT. They don't have to be, as some
aspects are very close, yet out-of-sign. However, the principle of a Grand Trine is that there or
3 (or more) planets trine each other in the same element. When you see a Grand Trine in a
chart, it looks like a large triangle. A Grand Trine aspect pattern can create a feeling of ease
and complacency because things seem to "just happen" seamlessly, without effort, friction, or
force. This can signify a special talent or ability that appears effortless, but it can also signal a
tendency to be lazy or complacent because things come so easily that there is nothing to
prove and talent is never fully developed. Your tendency can be to leave the tough stuff for
another day. With a Grand Trine, there's always tomorrow....
A T-Square is a challenging aspect that signifies a struggle that intensifies and eventually
leads to a resolution. While T-Square configurations are common, they signify an inherent
challenge that forces growth or change that can lead to success in life. The focal planet, or
planet that squares the opposing planets, is the key to the T-Square and shows where tension
is most likely to show up. Conflict resolution may be aided by the missing or empty part of the
Square (opposing the focal planet).
While T-Squares are often found in charts, Grand Squares are less common and often signify
a weight to bear that keeps you on a short leash. It may seem like access is continuously
denied and you are restricted to a small area where growth is only possible with discipline and
hard work. For some reason or another, you are continually stressed and need to consciously
maintain balance, always being forced to stick to the straight and narrow. Somehow, these
people often learn to carry big loads and are capable of effectively handling large
responsibilities. However, they can also feel overstressed and overburdened at times.
Yods
In a YOD pattern, 2 planets make a sextile, and they both make a quincunx (inconjunct or 150
degree aspect) to a 3rd planet, creating a triangle, or Yod. If you imagine a planet at 0 Aries
and 2 planets sextile each other at 0 Virgo and 0 Scorpio, this is a Yod.
Yods are called the "finger of God" and have a connotation of being receptive to messages
from higher states of consciousness. While Yods can be exotic and you can enjoy the
adventure of feeling like a stranger in a strange land, you may also need to make consessions
and be adaptive to unfamiliar situations when you have a Yod in your chart. It may be that
you give in one direction and get your needs met from a completely different source, so it is
not possible to measure how much others give you to decide how much you can give.
You have a T-Cross (also called the T-Square) when two planets
that make an opposition aspect (180 degrees) are both making
a square aspect (90 degrees) to some third planet. Draw lines
connecting all three and you have a T.
The planet that makes the square aspects with the opposing
planets gets emphasized. We say that it is in Point Focus. That
means it gains in importance when you are interpreting the
chart. However, in my experience, being in Point Focus is not
as strong as being singleton. If one of the other planets in the T-
Cross happens to be the only one in a particular element,
quality, or house type, it will have a greater effect than the Point
Focus planet.
The way out of the potential problems that all those stress
aspects can cause is indicated by the empty leg. After all, a T is
like a cross with a missing piece. All you have to do is draw a
line completing the cross and see the house and sign where it
lands. Thats the area of your life where the solution can be
found.
Lets take a look at some examples.
The T-Cross itself has that empty leg aiming towards her 12th
house. Thats the house of hidden things and self-undoing. No,
that does not mean the problems of the T can be resolved by
doing herself in! It could be a plus though, if one were doing
investigative reporting, finding out hidden things and bringing
them to the light of day.
The empty leg of his T-Cross lies in his 4th house. Home and
domestic environment? But Gandhi seemed to be in public
constantly. The answer is that the 4th house rules more than
domestic environment. It also shows your foundations, the basis
of your life. And it rules homeland as well. Gandhi did more than
anyone else to achieve independence for his homeland, India.
He re-founded an entire country. The Fixed Sign nature of his T-
Cross gave him enormous persistence (fixed purpose) and
placed his emphasis on his values. He didnt do it with guns, but
with a philosophy of non-violence.
His Sun, however, is right at the top in his 10th house (career).
Well, that can get you plenty of attention. But that T-Cross
empties out into his 4th house, home, domestic environment,
and the foundations of your life. That was the area he
neglected, and that was what eventually brought him down.
The empty leg of his T-Cross lands in his 11th house (friends,
hopes, wishes). Any relief from the stresses and strains of his T-
Cross can be found by spending time with friends, or by further
pursuing his own hopes and wishes. Nice work if you can get it.
And he did.
