MME 832 Machine Tool Design -3 UNITS

Analysis, design and selection of machine components considering stress concentration and
machine dynamics for: shafts, head stock, tail stock, carriage, table, knee, column and over arms,
fasteners, transmission elements and bearings; Design of machine tool control systems, gearbox,
power requirements, drive systems, spindle, guide-ways, and toll-table sizes; Fluid equipment:
characteristics, design principles and component selection for fluid equipment such as blowers,
axial and centrifugal pumps, compressors, boilers, heat exchangers and hydraulic turbines such
as Pelton Wheel and Francis Turbine; Piping and pipe layout; Design codes; Tooling: Cutting
tool geometry, design and materials; Die and mould design; Machine tool kinematics and
manufacture; Testing of machine tools: direct and indirect tests, acceptance assessment and
analytical tests, instrumentation, procedure for dynamic analysis, maximum power limit and
width of cut limit; Design aspects of Modern CNC machine tools; CNC structures,
Design/selection of linear motion systems, ball screws, CNC feedback devices, CNC spindles,
bearings, feed drives and servomotors for CNC machine; Exercises on the design of machine
tools CAD software packages.

parameters, reliability of design and testing methods, acceptance sampling; Exponential and
Weibull models; Availability and maintainability; Functions of maintenance and maintenance
management; System reliability with components in series and in parallel; Active and standby
redundancy; Decision making and statistics of failure; Maintenance resources; Quantitative
techniques as an aid to maintenance organisations; Spare parts inventory control; Network
analysis for the planning and control of maintenance: Condition based maintenance, design out
maintenance, planned preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance; Comparison of
preventive, on-condition and repair maintenance.
