About This Manual

Contents
This course provides a general description of SDH networking application. Its the
theoretical material about SDH networking.
In this manual, such contents as the basic network topology, basic network elements,
the survivable networks, synchronization, orderwire and auxiliary data interface,
ECC networking, are all covered.
Chapter 1 Common SDH Network Topologies
This section mainly describes the five basic network topologies, which are line,
star, tree, ring and mesh.
Chapter 2 Common Network Elements
This section mainly describes the basic network elements of an SDH network,
their architecture, functions and application. Those network elements are TM,
ADM, REG and DXC.
Chapter 3 Introduction to SDH Network Protection
This section mainly describes a number of common survivable networks. The
network architecture, protection mechanism, switching and restoration criteria,
traffic flow, network capacity are discussed in this section.
Chapter 4 Synchronization of SDH Networks
This section mainly describes synchronization of an SDH network. It covers such
topics as synchronization modes, synchronization methods, synchronization
reference chain, SSM, and the impementation of synchronization by Huawei
Technologies.
Chapter 5 Orderwire and Data Interface Application
This section describes, through examples of demonstration, the orderwire
configuration, which includes the addressing call, conference telephone, hotline
telephone, special line telephone, outgoing subnet connection. This section also
touches the auxiliary data interface configuration, which covers the F1 port and
F2 broadcast data interface configuration.
Chapter 6 ECC Networking Application
This section discusses the ECC networking of an SDH network. The topics
include the node ID and node IP, their inherent relationship, the common
connection modes between the NMS computer and the gateway NE.

Target Readers
This book is intended to the following readers:
Have mastered the basic principle of SDH.
Be informed of the features and functions of Huawei-developed OptiX optical
transmission equipment;
Be technically qualified for SDH equipment maintenance, project construction,
etc.

Format Meanings

Key name and button Key name, e.g. <Enter>, <Tab>, <Backspace>, or <a >.

expressed with a pointed

bracket, in the font of Times
New Roman.

<Key 1 + Key 2> Press the keys concurrently; e.g. <Ctrl+Alt+A> means the
three keys should be pressed concurrently.

<Key 1, Key 2> Press the keys in turn, e.g. <Alt, A> means the two keys
should be pressed in turn

[Menu Option] The item with a square bracket indicates the menu option, e.g.
[System] option on the main menu. The item with a pointed
bracket indicates the functional button option, e.g. <OK>
button on some interface.

[Menu 1/Menu 2/Menu 3] Multi-level menu options, e.g. [system/option/color setup] on

the main menu indicates [color setup] on the menu option of
[option], which is on the menu option of [system].
