OTIVO CULTURAL
While Hispanic young people value comfort and informality in dress, they are
generally very style-conscious. For this reason small, fashionable boutiques
abound in the larger cities, along with the large department stores. El Corte
Ingls (The English Cut) is one of Spains best-known department store
chains. Colombia has xito and, in Mexico, El Palacio de Hierro and Liverpool
are large department stores with numerous branches.
Hispanic students used to dress very formally. Years ago, for example,
young men were expected to wear a suit and tie to class, but in recent years
dress codes have been relaxed considerably. Today many college students
attend classes in jeans and sandals, much like their North American counter-
parts. And many imitate dress styles popularized by American and English
rock stars.

MEMOPRCTICA
In memorizing new material, you are more likely to be successful if you
develop systematic study habits. For example, jot down on a flash card or a
slip of paper some new words from tomorrows lesson and begin going over
them as you leave class today. Go over themEnglish to Spanish and then
Spanish to Englishas you walk to your next destination. Before your next
class, take advantage of the two or three minutes you have to wait for the
instructor to review the list. Try to look at the new words for a few moments
every hour or so; frequent reviews throughout the day will fix the words more
firmly in your mind than will a single, lengthy study period.

3.5 Present Participles and
Progressive Forms
Pedro est hablando con el dependiente.
Present participle is the name given in English to the verb form ending in -ing.
Its Spanish counterpart is formed by adding -ando to the stems of -ar verbs
and -iendo to the stems of -er and -ir verbs.*
trabajar trabajando working
comer comiendo eating
discutir discutiendo discussing
The present participle can be used with estar to express an action in progress
at the present time. Although the present tense in Spanish can also convey this
idea (Escribo una carta = I am writing a letter), estar followed by the present
participle (Estoy escribiendo una carta) emphasizes the progressive meaning.
*The present participles of -er and -ir verbs whose stems end in a vowel use the ending -yendo:
leer leyendo.

B El contexto.
Another good strategy when reading in Spanish is using context to
figure out unknown words or expressions. Using context means relying on the
surrounding words and phrases to make logical guesses at the meaning of a partic-
ular word. When you come to a word you dont know, ask yourself: What does the
text around this word mean? What would make sense here? Once youve figured
out a possible meaning, continue reading and see if it fits with the text.
Below are some excerpts from the ad for Arturo Calle. Can you figure out the
meaning of the underlined words and phrases from context? Go back to the ad and
read it carefully before beginning.

Arturo Calle son ciertas o falsas. Si son falsas, corrjalas (correct them). Refer
back to the ad as necessary to find your answer.
