Evaluating Herschels experiment

This table of results is from an experiment like the one that William Herschel did in 1800.
One thermometer was placed in different parts of a spectrum of light, and left for 10 minutes. The temperature
was recorded every 2 minutes. Firstly the thermometer bulb was placed in the blue light. After that, in the
yellow light, and finally it was measured whilst the bulb was lying just beyond the red colour.

Colour Temperature (in C)

after 2 after 4 after 6 after 8 after 10 Overall
at start
minutes minutes minutes minutes minutes rise
Blue 19 21 21 23 25 25
Yellow 19 20 18 25 28 28
Beyond red 19 25 27 30 30 30
1 Draw either a line graph of temperature vs. time for each colour thermometer (A*) or draw a bar graph of
the overall rise in temperature for each colour.

2 Write a conclusion for the results in your book.

The full range of colours we can see is the

spectrum. There are electromagnetic waves beyond each end of this,
which we cannot see unless we use special detectors. Herschel
discovered . He placed thermometers just beyond
the end of the visible spectrum.

infrared red visible

Extension: Where might Herschel have found ultraviolet radiation if he looked?
