HE NEEDL Rain washes pollutants from streets, construction sites, and land into storm sewers
that ultimately end up in the the NYC Blue Network during heavy rain. During a Com-
bined Sewer Overflow event, the storm sewers and ditches empty stormwater carry-
ing pollutants directly into streams and rivers with no treatment. Polluted stormwater
are natural and sustainable treatment wetlands that re-
move excess nutrients and contaminants from the NYC
Blue Network. Microbes and plants filter nutrients and
other pollutants from water. With a large surface area

Threading the Needle with Green Infrastructure

In an effort to support long-term NY YC livability, Threading the Needle is

a vision to link the waterfront with a coontinuous greenbelt that visually
threads the water corridor and proovides connectivity between the Clean
Tech Expo centers and Transit Huubs. Working with the NYC green infra-
strucuture master plan to reducee storm mwater contamination, the islaands
create engaging places that align withh the communitys vision for a sustain-
able Blue Network & invites waterrfroont recreation. The project sharres an
innovative park treatment thaat suppporrts sustainable stormwater maanage-

How Does Mycofiltraatio

on Work?
?

Mycofiltration is a form of filttratioon using mushroom mycelium to cleean

polluted water to a leess conttaminnated state. According to research by Paul
Stamets, undergroounnd myceliuum networks produce enzyme acids that
break down hydrogeen and carbon chains. Interwoven microfiltration mats
that are incorporaatedd inn thhe islands effecttiveely eliiminate diesel based tox-
ins carried by stormw water from surrouunding impermeablee surfaces. The
proposed islands woould intercept, filteer andd convert certain contaminants
to fungal sugars.. The island gardenns mainntaiin a visuallyy intriguing com-
posittion with a lussh vegetated flow, contributingg towards a transformative,
multii-sensory exxperience that invites com mmunityy to access the water.
