The Researchers
Junk foods are typical packaged snacks that contain high levels of calories from sugar or fat with
little fiber, protein, vitamins or minerals. The government is in process of review of the proposed
additional tax on junk foods. This tax is called sin tax. Sin Tax is an involuntary contribution to the state
imposed on alcohol and tobacco goods. As the new administration starts its reign, the proposal of
additional tax on junk foods is raised by the Department of Finance secretary, Sec. Carlos Dominguez.
According to Valencia et al. (2008), raising revenue is the primary reason why the government imposes
tax on every individual that belongs into their territory. It serves as a fund to support the expenses of the
state for the benefit of the society. In addition to its purpose, the proposal aims to compensate the
decrease in income tax.
