Emus are omnivores. They consist grasses, flowers, fruits, berries, seeds from the mulga shrub, various
plants ans insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, ladybirds, caterpillars, ants and moth larvae. Emus
sometimes are not able to drink for a day or two because of the arid environment that they live in but when
they do found water they drink large amounts. They usually look their food during the day. They also
require stones and pebbles to assist the digestion of plant material.

Extinct

Emu is havent extinct. Not many people kill emus in australia. Emu is not a rare animal, There is still many.
Habits

They are nomadic and roam the countryside looking for food. Although they are solitary creatures, emus can
live in flocks or pairs. Emus can swim and if they have to, they will cross rivers when they are wandering.
But they prefer to just play in the water.

Reproduction

The female emu lays her eggs (on average 11 eggs) which are large, thick-shelled and green in colour and
then leaves the male emu to do the brooding. The female emu will mate with other males and will produce
multiple clutches of eggs. For the next 8 weeks after the eggs have been laid, the male will sit on the nest,
carefully turning the eggs around 10 times each day. An average egg can measure 5 inches long and 3 inches
wide and weigh up to 900 grams

Behavior

Emus are quite vocal birds and their vocalizations include a loud booming noise which is created by an
inflatable neck sac that has a thin wall and is around 12 inches long. They also make grunting sounds and a
deep-throated drumming sound. Some of their noises can be heard up to 2 kilometres away. They usually
travel in pairs although they can form huge flocks. They follow a seasonal migration pattern, typically north
in the summer and south in the winter although eastern emus seem to follow no pattern at all. Emus are able
to swim when the need arises. They are human fearless birds and have been known to approach small groups
of humans and help themselves to any food on offer.

Special thing

Emu requires water on a daily basis. During cold weather, they recycle air in the nasal passages for
creating the moisture that can be used.
Emu swallows small rocks and pebbles to facilitate grinding of food and accelerate digestion.
Emu is also excellent swimmer. It can easily cross the river while looking for food and new feeding
areas. Emu can travel thousands of miles each year.
Emu can survive between 5 and 10 years in the wild.
Emu chicks are active as soon as they hatch. Their body is covered with stripes of brown and
creamy-colored soft feathers that provide camouflage. After three months, their plumage starts
looking like feathers of adult animals.
Emu Eggs are dark green in color, have thick shell and weight of around one pound. Male sits on
eggs during the next 8 weeks, until they are ready to hatch. During that time, male does not eat but
uses stored fats as a source of energy.
Emu mates during summer and lays eggs during cooler months. Female lays between 8 and 10 eggs.
Since the eggs are large, female lays one egg every 2 to 3 days.
Emu is a fast running animal. It can reach 30 miles per hour.
Emus are usually solitary animals, but they sometimes travel in pair. Emu can gather in flocks when
large quantity of food is available.
