Relaxing after lunch

Assalamualaikum Sohail. We all had full tummies after eating lunch so teacher asked all the
children to choose a book and sit quietly on the mat. I noticed you listening to the teacher and
before you went to the mat you washed your hands, I was very impressed that you chose to do
this as it showed me you have an appreciation for our books. You then walked over to the box
of books and chose your favourite one then proceeded to the step and sat down. Sohail, as
you were reading through the book you let out squeals of delight with every page you turned.
The book had lots of cars and big dump trucks, I know you love playing in the sandpit with the
dump trucks and filling up the buckets, so I guess this is why you chose this book. Pretend
reading is a very important pre-literacy activity. During this time you are practising your
communication skills. Your individual learning goal this term was to work on your communication
skills with others, which I have noticed you doing with your friends, however pretend reading
is also a valuable communication skill. It is through the pages of books that we see ourselves,
others and the world.

Communication / Mana Reo: Children experience an environment where they develop verbal
communication skills for a range of purposes. Overtime and with guidance and encouragement,
children become increasingly capable of understanding oral language and using it for a range
of purposes. These outcomes will be observed as learning in progress when, for example,
children demonstrate confidence that when their first language is valued and increasing their
ability in the use of at least one language. Children are strong and effective communicators.
