Rationale

This unit entitled Plants is designed for 2nd grade. The unit will integrate many academic
disciplines while teaching students about plants with specifics such as the plant cycle, basic
needs, parts of a plant/flower and parts of a plant we eat.
Students will do a variety of activities to enhance their learning. First the students
explore an introduction to the concept of Plants. Then the students will experience through
literature information about the seed and create a diagram of a seed. Next the students will
learn to identify the Plant cycle demonstrating their new knowledge with plant figures. Finally,
the students will explore the plant and learn what parts of the plant we are able to eat.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards, 3.1.2.A.5 Form and
function,3.1.2. C. Adaptation, and 3.1.2. A Life Cycles. The students will be producing works of
art, speaking and listening during discussions, applying process knowledge that enables them to
become independent leaders thought inquiry and design, and study the dynamics of life
science, which includes the studies of forces of nature that build earth and wear down earth.
When the unit is complete, the students will be able to describe different basic needs for a
plant, the processes of the plant cycle, knowing what parts of the pant we are able to eat, and
describe the different parts of a plant/flower. This content is key in a students ability to
understanding, explore, and explain the natural world around them.
