Sort leaves according to various attributes
And learn the purpose of leaves and veins

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
. - Recognizing that all leaves do not look the same
- Parts of a plant
Key Vocabulary:
Leaf- the flat, thin part of a plant that grows on the steam
- Are parts of a the plant where food is made by photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon
dioxide from the air, water from the soil, and energy from sunlight. During
photosynthesis, the leaves use light energy to change carbon dioxide and water into
sugars(food)
Content/Facts:
Veins in a leaf
Measuring counting and recording
Stem (Petiole)
Other plant parts ( flowers, stems, root, seed and leaves)
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
- Reintroduce the basic needs a plant needs to help grow
- Then ask questions such as what they think leaves are like Write the students
responses on the board
- Ask them if they would like to find out and get them excited to go searching for leaves.

Development/Teaching Approaches
Tell students to grab their coats and line up at the door.
Explain to them that we are going on a nature walk to select their leaves ( or you can
have them bring leaves from home)
Hand out clipboards so that students can write on and pencils to write with have the
students write down where they found each leaf .
Remind the students that for this observation they are only to use their eyes and hands
they can not eat any of the plants they observe.
Have the students collect as many leaves as they can and place them in their bags.
Return to class inside and have them put their coats away
Have the students in their desk and pair and share with a partner about some of the
leaves they observed.
Encourage them to compare their leaves with someone else.
Discuss the similarities and differences among the leaves collected.
Use grouping circles to group the leaves into sets. Choose two attributes large and
shiny for example.
Make a two circle venn diagram using the grouping circles and place all the leaves in
the proper set.
Distribute hand lenses and have students observe their leaves. Have them identify the
veins and notice their shapes.
Discuss that these veins carry food, water and nutrients to all parts of the leaf.
Compare that idea to the veins in their hands own hands and arms and the similar
function of carrying blood and nutrients to parts of the body.
Give students rulers and have them measure the lengths of five or six different leaves
Have them place the leaves from shortest to longest and make leaf rubbings on a long
piece of paper to record the order.
Then have the students each select one leaf from their set. Distribute the second student
page and instruct them to carefully trace the leaf on the grid.
Have them count the lengths, widths and surface areas of their leaves.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
Lastly as a class order the leaves from least surface area to greatest surface area.
And allow the students to hang up their leaf rubbing on the wall.
Now that we discussed one part of a plant tomorrow we will examine all the parts to a plant
and what each part does to help the plant grow.
Accommodations/Differentiation:
- Have students paired with students if they are having trouble sorting.
