Design Of STP

Population of students considered=1000

Per Capita waste water production=100litres/day/person

Assum, sewer dia=D=0.4m

Velocity of waste water =v=83.47 x R2/3 x S1/2

R=D/4=0.4/4=0.1m

V=0.728m/s with slop of 1/600

Discharge Q= /4 x D2 x V

a) Bar Screen
Provide spacing =40mm c/c with angle 45o
Rectangular or circular bars of size =10 x 50 x10 mm
Peak flow= 2 x Avg Flow= 2 x 100= 200 ltr/day
= 0.02m3/day

b) Grit Chamber
Horizontal velocity 0.2 m/ sec (keeping to settle down the heavy particles)
Detention time = 1 min
Length= Velocity x Detention time = 0.2 x 60 = 12m
Volume to accumulate = Discharge x Detention time = 0.091 x 60
C/s= 5.46 /12 = 0.45 m2

Provide Width of chamber 1 m and depth =0.45 m2

Provide, 25% additional length to accumulate inlet and outlet zones
Length of Grit Chamber = 12+ ((25/100)*12) =15 m
Provide, 0.3 m free board and 0.25 m grit accumulation zone depth
Total Depth = 0.45 +0.3+0.25 =1 m
Width =1 m

c) Primary Settling Tank

Depth of tank assume 3 m with time period of 24 hours
Qavg = (2x10-5 x106 x 10-3)/24= 0.00083 m3/hr
Volume of tank = Qavg x T =1.67 x 10-3 m3
Plan Area = Volume / depth = 5.556 x 10-4m2
Area= /4 x D2
So , D= 0.0267 m
Design of outlet- Assume width =0.5m
Velocity-1m/sec
Now, Average flow/2 = Discharge= 50 l/d/person = 5.78x10-7 m2/sec
Depth = Discharge /(Widthx velocity) = 1.15 x 10-6m
