WELDABLE STEEL PIPE FITTINGS

0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted ,by the Indian Standards Institu-
tion on 28 September 1967, after the draft, finalized by the Steel Tubes,
Pipes and Fittings Sectional Committee had .been approved by the
Structural and Metals Division Council.
0.2 Although the subject of marine pipe fittings coverss variety of items,
in the first instance, seamless pipe bends and welding unions have been
dealt with in this standard. The other fittings, such as threaded welding
sockets, drain plugs, suction and collecting funnels, changeover bend and
general purpose clamp will be covered by a separate standard which is
under preparation.
0.3 In the formulation of this standard due weightage has been given to
international co-ordination among the standards prevailing in different
countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the field in this
country. This has been met by deriving assistance from the following
publications:
B.S. 806 : 1957 Ferrous pipes and piping installations (for and in
connection with land boilers ). British Standards Institution.
B.S. 1965 : Part 1 : 1963 Specification for butt-welding pipe fittings
for pressure purpose, Part 1 Carbon steel.
ISO/R 64-1958 Steel tubes, outside diameters. International Or-
ganization for Standardization.
ISO/R 221-1961 Steel tubes, thicknesses. International Organization
for Standardization.
ISO/R 285-1962 Steel tubes butt welding bends. International
Organization for Standardization.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express-
ing the result of a test or analysis shall be rounded off in accordance
with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the
rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this
standard.
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised).

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers requirements for weldable steel pipe fittings for
marine purposes.
1.2 This standard does not include flanges.
I.3 Dimensions, lvhich are not included in this standard are left to the
dependin, m on the end use of iittin~s5.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.1 ror the purpose of this standard, nominal pipe size shall mean nominal
internal diameter of the fitting. It may be the actual bore or an approxi-
mation to it.

3. MANUFACTURE

3.1 The elbows and bends shall be manufactured from hot finished seamless
carbon steel pipes. The seamless steel pipe elbows and bends shall be
made of steel produced by open hearth or electric process. The material
of the pipes shall show, on check analysis, not more than O-05 percent each
of sulphur and phosphorus.
3.2 Weldable steel pipe unions shall be made from steel conforming to
Class C25 of IS : 32.61-1966*.

4. TYPES

4.1 ,Weldable steel pipe fittings shall be of the following types:

a) Seamless 45 and 90 elbows,
b) Seamless 180 return bends, and
c) Steel unions.

5. DESIGNATION

5.1 Weldable steel pipe fittings are designated giving the following parti-
culars in the sequence shown:
a) Type of fitting,
b) Size designation, and
c) Code letter.
For example extra strong 180 return bend in nominal size 50 mm
shall be designated as Return Bend 50 ES .
*Specification for carbon rtccl forgings for shipbuilding industry.

3
IS : 4310 - 1967

6. DIMENSIONS
6.1 The bending radii and thicknesses of seamless steel elbows and bends
shall be as given in Table 1.
6.2 Sizes and dimensions of unions shall be as specified in Table 2.
6.2.1 The unions shall be threaded to dimensions specified in IS : 554-
1964*.

6.2.2 All the dimensions shown in figures with Table 2 shall enable fit-
tings to be screwed or welded to tubes in accordance with IS : 1239-19647.

7. PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE

7.1 For hot finished seamless bends and elbows, the maximum per-
missible design pressure and temperature shall be 21 kgffcms and 260C.
For steel unions they shall be 40 kgf/cma and 120C respectively.

8. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
8.1 General requirements relating to the supply of steel fittings for marine
purposes shall conform to IS : 1387-1967x.

9. GALVANIZING
9.1 Where fittings are required to be galvanized, they shall first be
thoroughly derusted, washed as required and then dipped in a bath of-
molten spelter ( containing not more than l-5 percent of impurities) at a
temperature suitable to produce a complete and uniformly adherent
coating of zinc.
9.1.1 Fittings which are to be screwed shall be galvanized before
screwing.
9.2 The galvanized coating shall be such that it is capable of passing the
test for determining uniformity of coating specified in Section II of
IS : 2633-l 9645.
9.2.1 Should a test on the galvanized coating,be required, the purchaser
shall state this in his enquiry and order, and for this purpose one piece
shall be selected to represent 500 pieces or part thereof.

16. RETEST

16.1 Should a pipe selected for testing fail in any one or more of the
specified tests, two further tests of the same kind shall be made from the
same or another pipe from the same batch. Should either of these
further tests fail, the pipes represented may be heat-treated again and then
retested. If the repeat tests are satisfactory, the pipes shall be accepted,
provided they comply in all other respects with the requirements of this
