Biodegradable
What does Biodegradable mean?
A biodegradable material can be defined as a material
which can be decomposed by bacteria or other natural
organisms and not be adding to pollution.
Does It pollute the environment?

No, they do not pollute the environment unless there

is a large amount of waster which cannot be degraded
into harmless substances in the nature at the right time
What is biodegradable waste
 Biodegradable waste is a form of waste, originating
naturally from plant or animal sources, which may
be degraded by other living organisms.
 Biodegradable waste can be usually found in
municipal solid waste such as green waste, food
waste, paper waste, and biodegradable plastics.
Some of the sources contain human waste, sewage,
slaughterhouse waste etc.
Harmful effects of biodegradable
wastes
Biodegradable wastes pollute the environment only when
they are in excess in the environment. They can affect the
environment in the following ways:
1. They generate a large amount of microbial flora around the
wastes. These microbes can cause many communicable
diseases in humans, plants and animals.
2. These wastes generate bad odour on burning due to the
release of certain gases.
3. Heaps of such wastes are the breeding grounds for carriers
and vectors like mosquitoes and rats which spread so many
communicable diseases.
Non-biodegradable
What does Non-biodegradable mean?

A Non-Biodegradable material can be defined as a

kind of substance which cannot be broken down by
natural organisms and acts as a source of pollution.
Effect on Earth
 Waste quantities are generally growing in all countries all
around the world. Every year billions of tons of waste are
generated. These wastes are the result of activities in our
homes, businesses and industries and disposal of all this
large amount is an enormous environmental problem with
many dimensions. Municipal, industrial and agricultural
solid waste and biomass deposits cause large scale pollution
of land and water.
Some important points about Non-
biodegradable
Such wastes which do not decompose naturally in the
environment causes pollution and are also harmful to
the living being are called the non-biodegradable
substances.
These substances do not degrade easily or by the action
of natural agents.
As their degradation rate is slow and the separation and
recycling are not easy and expensive too.
Examples of Non-biodegradable

NON-BIODEGRADABLE WASTES-
1. Glass
2. E-waste
3. Plastic
4. Metallic wastes
5. Synthetic Fibres
6. Ball point pen refills
7. Artificial rubber
