The conduction topic includes both steady and unsteady state. Types and designs of heat exchangers which are important to chemical process industries are included. 3.0 OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the theories and basic principles of heat transfer? 2. Analyze problems for steady and transient (unsteady state) heat transfer 3. Evaluate an appropriate heat exchanger used based on real case study problem. 4.0 | METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Lectures and Tutorials 5.0 LESSON PLAN WEEK | DURATION [| CHAPTER ‘ACTIVITIES Tatroduction To Heat Transfer © Dimensions © Rate equation Lectures and Tutorials Cenge!: t t # Types of heat transfer esas * Applications Conduction i ‘Rate equation for conduction Lectures and Tutorials ‘© Thermal conduction a oa nae A # Steady state conduction peniaaas aa e i ‘© Thermal contact resistance rene oe © Conduction through thick wall tube © Conduction through sphere and cylindrical * 2-D steady state finite different method LESSON PLAN FACULTY OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CHE 463 7 FE ATETRANGEER UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA PAGE : 2 Taster Transient conduction (fime | | ooo. and Tutorials a a © Lumped capacitance method (separation of | Cepeel'4.1, 4.2 variable method etc) : A ESIGNMENT A © Exact and approximate solutions WEEK 7: TEST 1 ‘Convection Heat Transfer Tenis baal Taaka ‘* Introduction to thermal and velocity Cengel:6.3,6.4,7.2,7.3, AiG oe boundary layer 748.48.5,8.6 ‘© External forced convection Example:8.1,8.2,8.3,8. ‘¢ Internal forced convection 485,86 cole Bodeatodl Lectures and Tutorials 105-11 1s * View factor Congel:13.3,13.4 Application of view factor ‘Heat Balance — Application in Heat Exchanger fern fh , | Lectures and Tutorials + Selection and types of heat exchangers’ | Cengels11.6,11.1,11.2, 1213 2 © Overall heat transfer coefficient 131145 Analysis of heat exchanger + LMTD method ASSIGNMENT 2 © NTU method WEEK 14: TEST 2 6.0 ASSESSMENT Tests and Assignments + 40% Final Examination + 60% 7.0 TEXT BOOK USED Yunus A. cengel, (2006) Heat and mass transfer: A practical approach.
