Rationale:
To familiarize students with the thermodynamics of different configuration gas-based power
plants that can be designed or the existing steam power plants can be retrofitted to use natural
gas as fuel and enhance their power generating capacities considerably.
Catalog Description: Thermodynamic review (energy and exergy analysis), power generation
cycles, gas turbine cycles, main and peripheral components of gas turbine, off-design
performance of gas turbine, emissions due to gas turbine combustion, heat recovery from gas
turbine, principle of the combined cycle, operation of ranking cycle, combined cycle
cogeneration facility, steam injected gas turbine cycle, and repowering of existing steam
power plant.

and control system. Efficient design, operation and maintenance of gas-fired power plants
require intensive knowledge in the instrumentation and control technologies. This course is
intended to give an understanding of instrumentation and control equipment and systems
being adopted in modern gas-fired power plants.
