CHEMICALS

1 g of Chalk BP
100 mg of Tragacanth BP
0.2 ml of Peppermint oil
5 ml of Syrup BP
25 ml of Double strength chloroform water BP
Distilled water

APPARATUS

50 &100 ml beaker
10, 50 &100 ml graduated cylinder
1 ml syringe
Mortar and pestle
Spatulas
Gloves
Tissue papers
Tray

PROCEDURE

1. 100 mg of Tragacanth BP was weighed accurately by using electronic balance.


2. 1 g of Chalk BP was weighed by using electronic balance.
3. 5 ml of Syrup BP was measured in a 10 ml graduated cylinder.
4. 0.2 ml of Peppermint oil was measured by using 1 ml syringe.
5. 25 ml of Double strength chloroform water BP was measured in a 50 ml graduated
cylinder.
6. Tragacanth BP was transferred to a porcelain water.
7. Chalk BP was added to the mortar using the doubling-up technique to mix the two
powders.
8. Syrup BP was added to the mortar and was mixed to form a smooth paste.
9. Some of the Double Strength Chloroform BP was added to the paste and was mixed
until pourable.
10. The contents were transferred to a 100 ml graduated cylinder.
11. The mortar was rinse out with more Double Strength Chloroform BP and was added
to the graduated cylinder.
12. The peppermint oil was added to the mixture in the graduated cylinder.
13. The volume was made up to 50 ml with any remaining Double Strength Chloroform
Water BP and distilled water.
