Plasticity and failure in disordered materials

Materialbehaviourunderstressisafascinatingnonlineardynamicphenomenathatoccurs
overvariouslengthandtimescales.Inductilematerials,theonsetofplasticityismarkedby
the avalanche dynamics and hysteresis. In brittle and quasi brittle materials, small scale
perturbations at the micro scale leads to catastrophic failures. Understanding material
response under stress at different length scales is of vital importance to physicists and for
manyengineering,biologicalandgeophysicalapplications.Thismeetingaimsatacollective
understandingofthematerialbehaviouratvariouslengthscales.
