THE EFFECT OF ABSOLUTE POWER IN THT

THT or The Handmaids Tale is a novel that wrote for reflecting our society in the

past and today. This book is created by Margaret Atwood. She is the Canadian writer that

have many work and THT become one of the famous books that she has ever written.

Moreover, this book has a chance to become the movie that is created by HULU production

because of the content of this book is very interest to many people today. In THT there are

many situations that occur in the Republic of Gilead, which became the story of this book.

Republic is Gilead is the totalitarian, which mean that the government in that period use their

power to control and change the rules of the society. Furthermore, because of the government

have an absolute power, so many things in society effected. In The Handmaids tale,

Margaret Atwood uses one theme, the effects of absolute power, which effects dystopia,

inequality in society and fear.

In The Handmaids Tale, the effect from tolitarism that happens the most is about

dystopia. Dystopia is the opposite of utopia which can be described a society with full of

chaos. For example, people dont respect each other and are divided into social classes. In the

story, the main character named Offred has to be a servant for commander and serve them.

Yet, there are a lot of problems because Offred is a woman. During Gilead period, women are

though to be unworthy. We can see that in The Handmaids Tale, the high classes in society

have no woman. So, offred get the oppressed from society because she is woman, while she

is the handmaid. According to Offred, she said that What I need is perspective, perspective

is necessary. Otherwise there are only two dimensions. Otherwise you live with your face

squashed against a wall, everything a huge foreground, of details, close-up, hairs, the weave

the bed sheet, futility, crisscrossed with tiny roads that lead nowhere. Otherwise you live in

needs perspective for overcome this craze situation because this society is very terrible for

her, so she must know how to adapt herself in society.

Then, because of the dystopian society, everyone in the society is unequal. In the

THT, we all know that the society is full of racism and that cause the problem about the

inequality. Which mean that the aspect from the society to woman might cause problem to

them. Even the classes in society too. Moreover, many people think that the existent of

woman is worthless. According to Aunt Lydia, she shows the film that is about porno from

seventies or eighties, which film have projected Women kneeling, sucking penises or guns,

women tied up or chained or with dog collars around their necks, women hanging from trees,

or upside-down, naked, with their legs held apart, women being raped, beaten up, killed.

Once we had to watch a woman being slowly cut into pieces, her fingers and breasts snipped

off with garden shears, her stomach slit open and her intestines pulled out (Atwood, p. 118).

This film called unwomen documentary, which shows that how less of value in women is in

society of Gilead. Furthermore, it indicates that aspect from men to a woman is like a toy and

all of women cannot disobey in the rules.

At last, one of the most important that the dark side of society lead to is about fear. There

are many kind of fear that occur in The Handmaids Tale. Fear to die, one of the most things

that affected by Gilead society because of their rules and law are brutal and cruel for women.

There is the handmaid escape because she fears to face and unbearable to this environment,

so she doesnt want to be the handmaid anymore. In Chapter 30, Knowing was a temptation.

What you dont know wont tempt you, (Atwood, p. 195). This quotes are telling by Aunt

Lydia, which she wants to give a lesson that fear to knowing, because knowing is temptation

and can lead to trouble. If we know something that is secret and maybe they might do

anything for letting the secret become secret.

To conclude, government in Gilead is tolitarism that take control the society by using

absolute power and causes the chaos in society. They rule their people by fear and make them

follow the laws. Furthermore, they create the oppression in society to many people.

Moreover, it creates the inequality to the society and racism is occur, which it causes many

women have a problem in that time. All of these shows the essence and the main effect of

tolitarism of THT.
