Personal Example:

Homeostatis
after rejected by 3 companies on day 1 of placement => kept calm => appeared for 4th one and gave my best.

Guilt
9th class => My marks in english were miscalculated (got more than deserved) => didn't tell teacher => got 1st
rank by margin => justified my actions to myself but later felt immensely bad => decided not to repeat it ever
again

Anecdote:
"I Can Make It Happen"
Even the great Thomas Alva Edison discouraged his friend, Henry Ford, from pursuing his fledgling idea of a
motorcar. Convinced of the worthlessness of the idea, Edison invited Ford to come and work for him. Ford
remained committed and tirelessly pursued his dream. Although his first attempt resulted in a vehicle without
reverse gear, Henry Ford knew he could make it happen. And, of course, he did.

Eg. of how value confusion arise

A child learns at school that honesty is always rewarded. But at home he/she realize that it is not always
true. How ? He/she got beaten by parents for telling the truth that father is actually at home not at kirana
store

Albert Einstein charged between $1 and $5 for his autographs!

Einstein was a a scientist celebrity in his time. Whenever someone would ask for his autograph, he would
charge them either $1 for a regular autograph or $5 for signing some memorabilia.
However, it was not out of greed. All the proceeds from this, he gave to charity. He also donated his
speaker fees for giving speeches

Persuasion & Fear appeals

Eg. Cigarette Warnings
Studies show that cigarette warning (smoke me and be ready to die of lung cancer) actually is counter
productive. How ? Images/Warnings trigger fear and what is the quickest way to escape feeling of fear to
a chain smoker.

Uncertainty Avoidance
Eg: Indians have low uncertainty avoidance. Why?

Baloch issue
An eye for eye makes the whole world blind

Cognitive dissonance Eg.

Cause: Cigarettes => Cancer message written
Reduce: Attitude or behaviour change (I will not smoke) | Add consonant info. (actually it helps Bowel
movement) | Trivialization (Sharma ji smoked 10 a day & died at 95) | Self affirmation (Chill, Nothing will
happen)
Intrinsic vs Instrumental value eg.
Intrinsic: Happiness
Instrumental: I want money so that I can become happy.

Conflict of interest

Karnataka HC judge recusing from hearing a case involving builder who tried to offer him bribe

Successful persuasion require overlap of field of experience

Eg. Persuasion by a female regarding importance of child nutrition and breast feeding will be more
effective to a group of women.

Belief
Personal Eg.
One of my mentees in college was in academic rehabilitation programme (multiple backlogs). After my
interaction with him, I realized that the reason for his poor academic performance was that he had firm
belief that he was not supposed be in that college as he qualified the exam from reserved category.

milk man presented his poverty as an excuse for mixing water in milk. God gave him a lake of milk so that
he can sell unadulterated milk. But due to old habit milkman asked God for a lake of water too!

Success ,failure,motivation,attitude
1. Listen to rahul dravid's bamboo speech
2. The Calgary Tower stands at 190.8 meters. The total weight of the tower is 10,884 tons, of which
6,349 tons is below ground (approximately 60%). This shows that some of the greatest buildings have
the strongest foundations. Just like a great building stands on a strong foundation, so does success. And
the foundation of success is attitude.

Pragmatism ...
Just as a swan when offered a mixture of milk and water, doesnt reject the mixture altogether but
judiciously separates milk from water(hamsa-ksheera nyaya) a young recruit has to make right moves to
avoid conflicts while retaining the opportunity to work for the society.
Btw, i would like to know your take on RAM jethmalani 's personal and professional ethics...

Means vs ends...
College semester exam... Bluffed a panel of IIT professors in final year project,UPSC interview panel etc.
and have been rewarded handsomely for that....why should I not keep continuing those habits ...
Pavlovian phenomenon !

learned helplessness
a condition in which a person suffers from a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or
persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression.

It aint about how hard youre hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward,
how much can you take and keep moving forward. Thats how winning is done!

Foundational values in civil services: Compassion

Sense of duty
Ends matter as much as the means used to reach them ( May have needed to kill some obstructing

Anecdotes : Not misusing public resources for private gain

Sir M. Visvesvrayya, then dewan of mysore state, used Government vehicle while he went to tender his
resignation. After tendering his resignation, he drove back by his private vehicle.
He always maintained two sets of candles one set bought out of government money and the other set
bought from his money. He used the former set of candles for looking into official documents and used
the latter set to read books.

Compassion towards co-workers

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
There were about 70 scientists working on a very hectic project. All of them were really frustrated due to
the pressure of work and the demands of their boss but everyone was loyal to him and did not think of
quitting the job.
One day, one scientist came to his boss and told him Sir, I have promised to my children that I will take
them to the exhibition going on in our township. So I want to leave the office at 5 30 pm. His boss replied
OK, Youre permitted to leave the office early today. The Scientist as usual got involved to such an
extent that he looked at his watch when he felt he was close to completion. The time was 8.30 PM.
Suddenly he remembered of the promise he had given to his children. When he reached home he found
out that his boss has taken his kids to exhibition.

Dedication to poorest of the poor

1979, Nobel Peace Prize to Mother Teresa. She canceled celebratory banquet as the money would
instead feed poor people.

Corporate Greed

Act is legally correct ethically wrong

I live in pg where a maid comes for cooking and cleansing. She is abt 65 yes old.every time I see her,SME
guilt consciousness in me,as at her age mist organised n public sector people enjoy retirement, but she
being unorganized n poor has to work.Which is not prohibited by law but fails at ethical level.I don't know
what to do

Social Influence: Conformity

In one of the workshops during my college, I along with 2 of my batchmates were representing a team
from IIT X. We were asked a very simple question and we made blunder while answering it. Now it turns
out that the majority of other teams (regional colleges) due to social influence might have made the exact
same mistake.

When we pass Railway Station, public places., we see old womens, small childrens
begging to us for money.
Sometimes I feel sympathetic towards them while sometimes empathatic and
sometimes compassionate. When next time I see them I try to ignore them. How could
we solve this conflict of virtues or ethical dilemma?
I guess this is known as crisis of conscience situation... I guess it arises due to clash between emotions
and practicality/ rationality.. Imo the course of action would differ person to person...all that matters is that
we need to justify that action

For instance,
If I see any child, women, old women or man begging, I usually buy them food / tea as it satisfies two
conditions
Helps me to contribute in feeding them
Prevents me from giving them money, which I don't know whether it ultimately remains with them
( beggars mafia)

But if I see a young / adult man begging,I totally refuse to help them in anyway as imo they are physically
capable of working and eraning money.

Both these courses help me in making sure that I don't encourage begging by giving cash which may be
unwisely spent, yet I can contribute to the needy( feeding them),ultimately giving me a sense of
satisfaction as a fellow human.
( Here we may quote thoughts of swami vivekanand of helping our countrymen. )

PS :This is my course of action for situation which may differ from other

"Gene drive" the new controversial type of research which ensures that a certain trait is passed down

Negative Social Influence

Leena, loves to play basketball but her peers mock her short height, so much so that Leena has
developed a negative attitude towards all sports.

Change is the law of nature. But all new changes are not ethical.Bring out a positive change in India or
world administration that fosters good governance.Where as another new change DAT deteriorated
human values and ethics in governance.

A cashless society to bring transparency, accountability in financial transactions thus keeping curbing

black money,counterfeit.

Protectionism of western world.refugees crisis. Also against wto mandate for free n fair trades.

Ps-plz CME out more good examples.

In India the girl child is instructed right from childhood to behave in a particular way which confirms to established societal norms for females such as being
submissive, passive and feministic in mindset...this may be termed as negative and destructive socialisation.. As a result of this the female adolescent
develops a sense of inferiority complex and submissiveness as compared to males, ultimately resulting in situation where they fail to be proactive and
assertive in making their life choices such as career choice and choosing a life partner... This is especially true in rural families while is reducing in urban
single child nucleated families.
Ethical Dilemma
Right of unborn foetus vs right of pregnant woman (rape victim) to terminate pregnancy.

Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 allows termination till 20 weeks. SC in recent judgement allowed termination even after 24 weeks as there was
threat to mother's life.

Example of fortitude - Recently SC justice Chelameshwar refused to take part in collegium proceeding due to opaqueness in it.This was despite he was in
minority over issue of collegium (4-1).

Trimester system

The case created the "trimester" system that:

gives American women an absolute right to an abortion in the

first three months of pregnancy
allows some government regulation in the second trimester of
pregnancy
declares that states may restrict or ban abortions in the last
trimester as the foetus nears the point where it could live
outside the womb; in this trimester a woman can obtain an
abortion despite any legal ban only if doctors certify it is
necessary to save her life or health.
The new laws must not place an "undue burden" on women seeking abortion services. However, it is the woman and not the authorities who have to
prove that the regulations are damaging.

As a result many states now have restrictions in place such as requirements that young pregnant women involve their parents or a judge in their abortion
decision.

Others have introduced waiting periods between the time a woman first visits an abortion clinic and the actual procedure.

Some states also provide information that has to be presented to women having
abortions that could discourage them from going ahead.

Selfless Service
Recent approaches used by the ministry of railways and external affairs ministry to sort out the problems of citizen using social media.

itarianism
Personal example-A stranger runs a website where aspirants buyers n sellers can discuss n bargain. From books to everything u need to settle in Delhi for
preparation.(hypothetical)

Short term vs long term utilitarianism- kudunkulm nuclear reactor issue.

Not always good-eg.Europeans Nations cannot allow all Refugess to enter n settle in their country.

Utilitarianism-can be guiding when law of land goes against morale values.Eg issues of Euthnesia for terminally ill,Abortion of a poor rape victim with 5month
old fetuses.
In recent year the cities has become more anonymous and acceptability of some values like Live-in has increased. Bring out the ethical dimensions, and what
do you think the change is for good or bad, Justify your views.

My village is
*famous for its watermelons*. When I was a child, the farmers would organise a
*watermelon-eating contest* at the end of the harvest season in May. All the kids
would be invited to eat as many watermelons as they wanted.
Years later, I went to college to study engineering. I went back to my village
after 6.5 years. I went to the market looking for watermelons. They were all gone.
The ones that were there were so small. I went to see the farmer who hosted the
watermelon-eating contest.
His son had taken over. He would host the contest but there was a difference.
When the older farmer gave us watermelons to eat he would ask us to spit out
the seeds into a bowl. We were told not to bite into the seeds. He was collecting
the seeds for his next crop.
We were unpaid *child labourers,* actually. He kept his *best watermelons* for the
contest and he got the *best seeds which would yield even bigger watermelons*
the next year.
His son, when he took over, realised that the *larger watermelons would fetch
more money* in the market so he sold the larger ones and kept the *smaller ones
for the contest.*
The next year, the watermelons were smaller, the year later even small. In
watermelons the generation is one year. *In seven years, village's best watermelons
were finished*.
In humans, generations change after 25 years. It will take us 200 years to figure
what we were doing wrong while educating our children."

Integrity pact by transparency international to bring ethical conduct in contracts between two parties .
It contains rights and obligations to the effect that neither side will pay, offer, and demand or accept bribes; collude with competitors to obtain the contract; or
engage in such abuses while carrying out the contract. The IP also introduces a monitoring system that provides for independent oversight and accountability

Affective Empathy
I was in tears after after watching Govind Jaiswal story. This state of myself in response to others emotions is called affective empathy.

Belief: Women are co-equal

Emotion: Respect for women
Behaviour: Including women in workforce

Happiness:

There was an old person, very weak and frail almost on verge of death, couldn't properly walk. I used to see him everyday. He was a cobbler and even at age
of 80 he will do this work instead of retiring. In evening he will buy something for his grandchildren and go back. This he said to me is the best happiness for
him. I see him as an inspiration. Happiness is bringing smile on someone's face even if u have to suffer for that.

Corruption is detrimental to morality ( human right violation), economy ( black money ) and equality ( money power)

Empathy towards weaker section and sustainable development &

Food security..

Enforcing UCC to ensure common code for all citizens as a will of people for the fulfillment of election menifesto is equality but may not be justice.
But enforcing UCC for the reason that Islam do not necessitates it; it is not allowed even in many Islamic countries; also it is biassed against women make it
both equality and justice.

Can be use both as a pro and a cons.

Vishaka guidelines
SC was not necessarily answerable but as a part of government was responsible.

I was standing where a person was lying injured after beaten up by a mob. Though I was not answerable but It was my moral duty as a good samaritan and a

Whistleblowing
Satyendra dubey a whistle blower despite knowing the risk reported highest level.
Lalit mehta despite given warning of life threat..continued with RTI appeal..and was killed.
Patriotism, Civilian Duty, Civic Valour.

My friend caught with people drinking in the hostel. When his father called me to enquire whether his son drank or not, despite pressure from my friend, I
spoke the truth. But also convince him to not pressurise him. To which he calmly replied why children fear so much in sharing truth with their parents!! I felt
helplessness on behalf of his parents.
True friendship, honesty, courage and emphathy.

Ethics in IR
Body of young boy, Alan Kurdi washed up on Turkish Beach, Syrian Refugee Crisis

was Reading Voltaire::He advocated theory of freedom of speech and participation but behaviourally he didnot liked interference of others. He lived alone with
