0. FOREWORD
0.1 This I n d i a n S t a n d a r d ( Part I ) was adopted by the I n d i a n Standards
Institution on 10 M a y 1977, after the draft finalized by the Industrial
Safety Advisory Committee h a d been approved by the Executive
Committee.
0.2 T h e industrial safety faceshields ( with plastics visor ) covered by this
specification can be used in wosdworking operations against chips a n d
sawdust; in metal m a c h i n i n g operations against flying particles; in buffing,
polishing a n d grinding operations where particles may strike the face; in
spot welding; a n d in the handling of corrosive materials. T h e y are not
acceptable for protection against heavy welding and gas cutting operations.
0.3 In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been taken from
U. S. Federal Specification L-F-36 C 'Industrial faceshields', published
in September 1963, and the American Standard Z-87.1-1968 'Practice for
occupational a n d educational eye a n d face protection', published by the
American N a t i o n a l Standards Institute.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance
with IS : 2-1960*. T h e number of significant places retained in the rounded
off value should be the same as t h a t of the specified value in this standard.
1. S C O P E
1.1 This standard ( Part I ) covers industrial faceshields with transparent
plastics visor for protection of the face from flying particles and from sprays
or splashes of hazardous liquids, molten metals a n d slags.
2 . T Y P E S A N D CLASSES
2.1 T y p e s Faceshields shall be of three types mentioned below :
Type 1 Faceshields without crown protector

3.1 General R e q u i r e m e n t s
3.1.1 Design T h e faceshields covered by this specification shall be
designed to provide protection to the face ( that is, the front of the h e a d
including forehead, eyes, cheeks, nose, mouth, a n d chin ) a n d neck, w h e n
required, from flying particles and sprays or splashes of hazardous liquids,
molten metal a n d slag. T y p e 1 a n d T y p e 2 faceshields shall be designed
for comfort a n d are to be worn directly on the the user's head. T y p e 3
shall be designed as an attachment for safety helmets.
3.1.2 Materials Materials used in the manufacture of faceshields
shall combine mechanical strength and lightness of weight a n d shall be
non-irritating to the skin. Metal parts shall be corrosion resistant. Plastics
parts shall be of slow-burning type.
3.2 Specific R e q u i r e m e n t s
3.2.1 Type 1 T h e faceshields shall consist essentially of a headgear,
including an adjustable h e a d b a n d a n d crown band; a durable tilting visor
support without crown protector; colourless transparent visor and a
removable and replaceable sweatband. T h e faceshield shall be similar to
Fig. 1 a n d shall comply with the test requirements specified in 4.
3.2.1.1 Headgear T h e faceshield headgear shall be fabricated of
good grade vulcanized fibre, acetate butyrate or equal material of at least
1.4 mm thickness. Headgear shall consist of a crown b a n d of at least 25 mm
width, an adjustable h e a d b a n d a n d sweatband. T h e adjusting devices
shall be m a d e of non-sparking material a n d shall have no sharp edges.
T h e design shall be such as to hold the visor and visor support comfortably
a n d firmly in place on the wearer's head, a n d shall provide for tilting
t h e visor away from the face. Adjustable bands for the faceshield headgear
shall be of the positive locking type of adequate range. T h e headgear
shall be adjustable, without the use of tools, a n d shall hold firmly in place

tests a n d if the number of defective shields in any sample exceeds 2.5 per-
cent of the sample size, this shall be the cause for rejection of the lot
represented by the sample.

6. SAMPLING
6.1 Lot All faceshields of the same type, class, and size presented at one
time shall be considered a lot for the purpose of inspection.
6.2 Sample Size The number of faceshields to be selected for a lot
shall depend on the size of the lot and shall be as given below:
