Understanding the World of

Virtual Artists:
An Interview with Marina Cruz-Garcia
by Sha Nacino

She is a visual artist by profession, a wife to Rodel Tapaya who isalso arenowned visual artist, and a mother to two boys.
Her personal advocacy is adoption.
As a visual artist, she and her husband have had several exhibits not only in the Philippines but also all over the world
like Australia, Germany, Taiwan, China, Japan, Hongkong, Singapore, and many other countries.
Ive met Marina a couple of times already and I found her and her husband Rodel both very down-to-earth. We became
friends through our common friend Bro. Rey Ortega, the founder of seven humanitarianorganisations, which include Tahanan
ng Pagmamahal, Jeremiah Foundation, etc.
It was a fine Friday when Marina and Rodel invited Bro. Rey Ortega, me, and some of their couple friends to have lunch
in their house in Bulacan. I love going out-of-town, so I volunteered to drive for Bro. Rey and another friend.Their house was
so beautiful. So was their studio. By the looks of it, you could say that Marina and Rodel were
very successful not only with their crafts but also with their finances. They also invest in the
stock market through COL Financial.
In our society, there is a common notion that there is no money in music or arts or the
creative side. We hear of parents and guardians advising their children to get real jobs. A lot
of people stick to their day jobs that they may not really enjoy and may not really be gifted at
because of financial reasons.
This is the reason why I interviewed Marina. Right after her talk at the TrulyRichClub Quick
Start last February 2016, I invited her to sit down with me for this interview while we were
munching our snacks.
Let us understand the world of visual arts. Is it really possible to pursue it as a fulltime
profession? Can it put food on the table in a sustainable way?

SHA: Hi Marina! Thank you for your time today. Can you share with us how your passion
for painting started? How do you describe your art?
MARINA: My pleasure, Sha! When I was still in elementary, I was very observant. I would take more time looking at
something compared to other kids.By just observing, my passion for arts was developed. My mother was a school teacher
then and I would help her create her visuals, hanggang sa ako nalang talaga yung gumagawa.
It became a natural thing for me to keep drawing and creating things. I get excited when I see books about crafts.

SHA: When did you know that you wanted to be an artist?

MARINA: I was in high school when I realized arts is something Id enjoy doing so much, time becomes immaterial. I
could already imagine myself being an artist.
(I also had a boost in high school to pursue becoming an artist
because I represented our school in poster-making contests and I would win. Im not academically-gifted but when it came to
the arts, I could place so I said to myself, maybe this is something I could do.)

SHA: After you graduated from college (she took up B.S. Fine Arts at U.P. Diliman), did you work in the corporate
world?
MARINA: Yes, I used to work in Ayala Foundation as a graphic designer and I used to work in Miriam College as an Art
Teacher for one whole school year, sa high school.
After my stint at Miriam College, I decided to become a fulltime artist. Actually, even when I was still a student, I was

already starting to build my career in arts. My friends and I started doing things outside the curriculum. We formed groups
and proposed exhibitions, galleries, museums. I was part of a group and we had mentors. Our mentors advised us and we
were heeding their advice.

SHA: When did you decide to quit your job and pursue painting fulltime? Did you have any fears and doubtsfinancially
speaking?
MARINA: In the Philippines, its not that expensive to become a fulltime artist compared to other artists abroad. For
example, if you are in New York and you want to become a fulltime artist, its really hard. You have to sustain yourself and pay
for your studio. The cost of living there is high.
Admittedly, its a brave step to decide to be a fulltime artist. Its challenging because you dont get a monthly salary
compared to when you were employed.

SHA:They say that artists just love to express their creativity without thinking of money. What is your take on that?
MARINA: When my husband and I started, we didnt really think about how to make money from it. No one really
taught us how to charge for our paintings. We just enjoyed the creative process. The commercial part is being taken cared of
by the dealer or galleries.
When you are an artist, youdont really need to set up a gallery, you just propose a show, then you concentrate on the
production and the creativity part, your artwork.

SHA: You and your husband Rodel are very successful as world-class artists. At the same time, you are also successful
in your finances. You invest in the stock market. You have your own house and you have your own studio. Can you share
with us some of your success principles, both as an artist and as a financial advocate?
MARINA: Just a disclaimer. We have so much to learn in art and there are so many other artists who are very successful.
We are young artists. We just keep improving our respective crafts.
As an artist:
You have to be really authentic. Love what you do. Log on the hours. Hard work. Go to the studio to work. There are days
when you dont feel like working but you still have to work.
Enjoy life. Do what you love to do and do it powerfully.
One thing helpful with us was to delay gratification, money wise. Themoney in our profession is cyclical. Project-based.
There are times when theres no income. It pays to have emergency fund. You have to plan.
We are happy to produce things, not all for sale. Some are just for presentation.
Conserve your resources. Invest in your craft. In our case, studio is important because thats where we work. Attend
workshops. Do your research. Keep on growing.
Always innovate. Always sharpen your skills, your ideas, your forms.
There are times when you are not successful.

In our finances:
It pays to have mentors. Carefully choose your mentors. Bro. Bo Sanchez inspired me to invest.
Take charge of what you want. You cant blame other people.
We dont regret anything that happened in the past. We all had mistakes/speed bumps We learn from the lessons.
Keep on doing the right thing. Keep doing your best.Blessed ako to have a partner/husband who encourages me to be
better.
Stewardship. If you believe this is what God gave you, you have to take care of it, develop it. Multiply it. Inspire people
to do the same.

SHA: What can you advise artists or writers or people on the creative side who want to pursue their passions fulltime?
MARINA: Whats stopping you? If its finance, your limiting beliefs, think of those things. Take the first steps.
Of course, theres always fear of the unknown. Look at it in a very honest way.
Give yourself time to do it. Whats the best that could happen? Whats the worst? Weigh the risks.
Sayang kasi ang buhay pag di mo ginagawa ang gusto mong gawin. You should be able to dowhat you want and enjoy
the time.Sayang, ang daming nangyari for you Jesus died for you.
During a two-month artist residency programin the U.S., Irealised how blessed we are in the Philippines because of the
low cost of living. Here, you can be a fulltime artist.

SHA: What are the highs and lows of your profession as an artist?
MARINA: HIGHS
- When you win an award
- When you have a show that was appreciated when collectors appreciate and buy your work
- You lost time because you were so engrossed and you feel like you have contributed

LOWS
- When you feel stuck
- When you feel whether the idea is worth showing or not. When youve logged in so many hours in the studio, yet,
youdidnt create anything.

SHA: Can you share with us what is in your bucket list?

MARINA: I want to go to religious places, to the land where Jesus walked.Swim with the butandings. Hug the biggest
trees.I want to see nature that reminds me how small I am. I want to go to different countries and meet other adoptee
families, inspire people and be inspired also.

SHA:What makes you happy?

MARINA: I am happy when the deepest desire of my heart is fulfilled,
when families are formed. I am happy whenchildren/orphans can eventually
find their families.I feel for the child when adoption doesnt push through.
Its so easy to be happy. You just need to look around you. Im happy
when I look at my children. I am happy when I look at our house, at the
plants. I am happy that my partner and husband is always there and I can
chat with him.
I am happy whenever my relationships are growing, when my
relationships with my mom, sisters, deepen.
I am happy when I inspire people to invest.
I am happy when I play with the dogs.
Its so easy to be happy. Youre right, Sha. You have to have a Gratitude Journal.
Your struggles also give you the muscles to be strong. God knows your character. He challenges you so you can go out
of your comfort zone. Of course, masakit yun. Pero pag naka-adjust ka na, ma-realise mo naGod orchestrated everything for
you.

It is refreshing to interview Marina and hear her perspective, especially as regards pursuing your passion in thecreative
side fulltime.
Many of us are afraid of the unknown and she challenges us to study and face the unknown head on. Because maybe,
the fear of the unknown is overrated.
If you were meant to paint, what is stopping you from pursuing painting as a profession?
If you were meant to sew, what is stopping you from doing it?
If you were meant to write songs and sing, whats stopping you?
What is that one thing that you love doing and that you excel at? What keeps you from pursuing it? Are you in a job that
sucks the energy and life outof you but you stick to it anyway because it is your only bread and butter? What if there are other
options to make a living while pursuing your real calling?
Have you been contemplating whether it is time to quit your job and pursue your real passion? I invite you to take time
to be quiet and to reflect. May God give you clarity to discern your calling and may He give you the courage to pursue it.
I wish you success and happiness!

5 Summer Businesss Ideas for Kids

By Tina Santiago Rodriguez

Most, if not all, entrepreneurs especially those who are part of the TrulyRichClub would probably telll you that its
never too early to teach kids business skills.
In fact, encouraging entrepreneurship in kids is something that is highly recommended by TrulyRichClub founder,
businessman and millionaire missionary Bo Sanchez himself. The summer season is usually a good time to do so, since
children usually have more free time.
So, whether or not youre a parent, below are some summer business ideas for the kids in your life (of course, they
can also try their hand at doing this even beyond the summer holidays!):

1. Wash cars.
A car wash business is something that even younger kids can start, and theyll probably enjoy their time
working too!
Gather buckets, sponges, soap and a hose for their car wash equipment. Make sure to involve your kids
in telling others about their cleaning services by getting them to help you make and distribute flyers around the
neighbourhood. You might also want to consider making the car wash a group effort by inviting your kids cousins or
friends to join them.

2. Water plants.
Encourage your child to help your neighbors out and earn some money by offering to water your neighbors
plants. At the same time, they can learn important values like the importance of caring for Gods creation.

3. Set up a refreshment stand.

Summertime often finds us craving for cool, delicious drinks. If you have the space in your compound, set up your
kids version of a lemonade stand, which is more common in countries like the U.S. Help your kids to makesome
sagot gulaman, or other popular Filipino coolers and sell these to neighbors and/or passersby.

4. Sell some sandwiches.

Even younger kids can put together a simple sandwich, so this is a relatively easy business to start.
Help your kids sell their homemade version of favorite sandwich variants like tuna, cheese pimiento, or
peanut butter and jam. You can also encourage them to come up with their own recipes and combinations.

5. Have a garage sale.

Encourage kids to round up toys, books and clothes that they no longer use but are still in good condition. Hold a
garage sale, and have your kids take the role of sales attendants. If their addition and subtraction skills are already
good, they can even become the cashiers.

The aforementioned are just some of the many summer business ideas for kids. Of course, when it comes to kids and
business, make sure to guide the children as needed, and supervise them especially if they are still very young.
No matter what the childs age is, though, try to make sure that he or she is involved somehow in the transaction
part of the business, so that he or she can see the importance of money in daily life.
Also, make the most out of the opportunity for the kids in your life to start a business by teaching them that money
can and should be used for good. Lets teach them that, as our business mentor Bo Sanchez says, the ultimate purpose of
wealth is to love others.

Virtual Career: Some Insights from

a Mentor
By Jomar Hilario

Virtual careers are varied. They can be graphic artists, writers, travel writers, ghost writers, accountants, illustrators,
SEO specialists, bloggers, commenters, Facebook Ads managers, social media managers, analytics experts, content
managers, content researchers, bookkeepers, people who follow up people, calendar keepers, secretaries, podcasters,
coders, software engineers, white hat hackers, online game developers, editors and more.
So, yes, any job is considered a virtual career as long as its done
at home and connects via the Internet to the main office.
To dive deeper into this world, you need to learn the 5Ds of
virtual careers:
Demands. Who hires these people? Do Filipinos have any
advantage or disadvantage? Is it a purely American thing?
Doubts. Why should you consider a virtual career? Why should
you not even consider it? What scams are out there?
Dollars. How much can you earn? How are you paid? Are your
taxes deducted automatically? How about benefits?
Days. Can you get a part-time virtual career? Nighttime only? Is
it anything like a call center or BPO (business process outsourcing) job?
What does a day of a virtual professional look like?
Desks. What kind of computer, equipment and Internet
connection are needed? Do you need to be a techno-geek or is computer and Facebook knowledge enough?
For this article, Id like to focus on the question of earningsdollars.

Dollars for the Provinces

According to an article in ABS-CBNs website, Total earnings of the Pinoy freelancers through Elance-oDesk was P9
billion from 2010 to the first four months of 2014. Thats around P2 billion per year.
And thats not just in Manila. The article said, Cebu is the top performing province, with Filipinos earning P706
million from Elance-oDesk between 2010 and 2014. Runners-up are Iligan, Bacolod and Davao.
In Metro Manila (Quezon City, Manila, Makati and Pasig), Filipinos earned P1.3 billion from freelance work on Elance-
oDesk from 2010 to the first four months of 2014.

So, Jomar, How Much Can I Earn If I Do This?

The common question about virtual jobs is, So how much money
does a virtual professional earn if she/he knows how to ______?
Example: So what does a virtual professional who knows how to
create websites earn?
Thats a limiting question and you dont want to go there. Why?
Example: Oh, website creators earn $300 a month. But youre Filipino,
so well pay you $200 a month.
If that conversation happens, what do you do? Will you charge
$200 a month? Or would you like more? How about $600 a month? Or
even higher? After all, you dont want to be just one of the thousands
of skilled online professionals who dont earn what they deserve. You
want to be the one clients prefer to hire at the rate you want.

How Much Can You Make in a Virtual Career?

This is easy. Take either the amount of monthly expenses you

have or the monthly salary you enjoy today.
Divide it by 24 days and then by eight hours. Convert this to US
dollars. This is your hourly rate.
Then, name a price anywhere near this number or higher. Make
sure you have the skills, attitude, experience, proof and gall (yes!) to
justify your rate.
A person claiming to be trained by Jomar to be a virtual
professional but charges P100,000 a month to create PowerPoint
presentations alone is not being realistic. This borders on being
crazy. What kind of real-world job merits P100,000 per month? You
dont know? Ask Google. A virtual manager makes that. A top virtual
programmer can make that, too. So does a Content Marketing Strategist
and a Facebook Ads Whiz and a growth hacker. There are many more.
Its all about attitude, confidence and skills.

How Often Do Virtual Professionals Get Paid?

You think like an employee. Virtual professionals are not

employees even if the US government thinks they are. The answer is,
When do you want to get paid? Yes, you decide.
The 14th /29th I suggest. You avoid major paydays like 15th/30th.
You choose dates when no one is using the ATMs or banks. I also
suggest you avoid 10th or 25th of the month because if you use PayPal,
you might wind up withdrawing on the 15th/30th because of its three-
to five-day processing time. So get paid once a week, twice a month,
what days it is all up to you.
But Jomar, wont the client insist on a schedule? Again, youre
like a weakling employee. Wake up. Youre not. Just state, Here are
my terms, and smile while saying it or typing it. It will be okay. Not
everyone on the planet is like your old boss. Yes, Ive met some and
they are really nice.

Jomar Hilario is the Filipino internet marketing mentor to Bro. Bo Sanchez. Nowadays, Jomar is spreading the wisdom of starting a
part-time virtual career to help create complete families for OFW spouses and parents, night-shift workers, overworked employees
and trapped commuters. The above article is taken from his book Virtual Careers: Earn Dollars at Home, Eliminate Daily Stress,
Embrace Your Family More. You may check virtualcareersbook.com to learn more.

5 Helpful Apps for a

More Productive Day
By Joyce Sosoban-Roa

Is it going to rain tomorrow, Siri? my husband asks. Siri answers, It doesnt look like it will rain tomorrow, Hester.
Sometimes, my husband would play with Siri and he would ask, Siri, am I handsome? And Siri would answer,
I suppose so. For a human. Or he would ask, Whats my name, Siri? And she would answer in her haughtiest voice,
Hester, or thats what you told me!
Siri, the Apple virtual assistant, is quite literally thata personal assistant (well, as long as she understands your
English!). She can email for you, text for you, search a place for you, and so many other things. She can even remind you
of your appointment!
Siri makes life more convenient and productive for us who use technology. In the same manner, applications (apps),
which are downloadable to your iPhone or Android device, makes day-to-day life easier to manage and enables us to
produce more out of it. Id like to share with you some apps that I have found to be of great help:

1. Todoist (https://todoist.com/). I personally use Todoist for my to-do list.

I find it helpful as it even emails me every day on the tasks that I need to
accomplish. It integrates well with Gmail as you can download an extension
of Todoist in Gmail and you can input all the things you need to do the next
day or the next month in your email rather than going to your phone to do
it. Then when youre on the move, you can check your mobile and the same
items will be there.

2. Evernote (https://evernote.com/). Evernote is so helpful because it is the all-around app

for me while on the go. I see a recipe leaflet on the supermarket that I hope to use one
day. I take a shot of the leaflet on Evernote, file it under my recipe category and it is there
for me to return to one day when Im about to cook. My family is going on holiday to a
new place and I read up on several tourist places to see there. I just cut the passages that I
like and paste it to Evernote. Then Im good to go and I dont have to look to the web when
we are on the road. I just check my Evernote. Whats more I can also write on Evernote. I
can even coordinate a project with other people through the app.

3. Another app that I find helpful is Tiny Scanner. You know how it is when you need to file
something and wish you have a scanner with you so you can store the document? That is
exactly what Tiny Scanner does. It turns your Smartphone into a mini scanner for documents,
photos, receipts and other texts then store or email them as PDF files. The good thing about
this app is it gives you a choice what size you want to scale the picture you took. You can scale
the scanned item into Letter, A4, Legal, A3, A5 or card size (85mm x 55mm). Once youve
cropped the file into the size that you want, you can then store them. It is a really nifty app to
have on your phone.

4. One app that helps in making me productive while surfing the web is Pocket (https://
getpocket.com/). When Im researching for an article, I save all the sites I want to
read in Pocket and tag them, then when its time to do the actual reading, I go back
to them. If you have nothing to do, youre waiting for a ride or for your doctor, or
you remember you want to check on that list of must-read books from a website,
then you can just go to Pocket.

5. For me and my husband, the You Need a Budget or YNAB app (http://www.youneedabudget.com/) is something
we swear to when it comes to budgeting. You pay a certain amount (USD50/year)
for it, but it is so worth it. You can test it for 34 days so you can check it out.
I have been budgeting since I was a teenager, and even went through a period
when I used a columnar notebook. The good thing about the new YNAB is it is
cloud-based. Wherever you are, as long as you have Internet connection, you can
input your income or expense. This means you know all the time if you are over
your budget or not. In YNAB, you can also set a goal for a specific category and the
app will show you what percentage you are to your goal.
The special thing about YNAB are its four simple rules: 1) Give every dollar
or peso, or whatever denomination youre usinga job; 2) Save for a rainy day; 3)
Roll with the punches; and 4) Live on last months income.
YNAB really helps us keep to our weekly, monthly and yearly financial goals.

There it is, five apps towards a more productive day! I hope one or two of these will be of help to you. For sure
there are so many apps and programs out there. Use what works best for you and make the most out of your day by using
them.

TRC Made Me a More Optimistic

Person: Lorenzo Santos TRC Story
by Sha Nacino

He works as Product Design Engineer in Saudi Arabia for about four years to date. He was blessed to bring his family
along with him, his wife Mary Rose and their children John Clarence and Francia.
Lorenzo said that the monthly P997 subscription fee for TRC used to be an issue for him. As time went by, he saw the
value he is getting from his TRC membership.
TRC has opened my mind to so many opportunities! It has made me a more optimistic person. I love the Powertalks!
They are very inspiring to listen to. We were so inspired that we started Feast Video here in our area with our family and
friends.
He is aware that as an OFW, he is earning much
compared to what he was earning in the Philippines. But
herealisedthat its not salary that makes people rich. It just
complicates things if one does not have a proper money
mindset.
TRC helped open my mind on many things. First, is
to have a goal in life and always be optimistic in life. My
perspective on money also changed. Its not all about
money but its all about love. I want to earn more to give
more to others and I will not love money; rather, I will use
it to love others.
I used to think that TRC only focuses on stock
market recommendations. But I realisedthat TRC is not
only makingyou a good investor. It is alsomoldingyou to
become a better person. It also helps me in my personal
growth, my family life, and my spiritual life.
Asked what the greatest lesson he learned from TRC, Lorenzo was quick to say, The greatestlesson I learned is how
to be truly rich in every sense of the word. Its not only about earning money. Rather, I learned to use money to love others.
And I love the GodWhispers sent every day! TRC and Bro. Bo Sanchez boosted my energy tofulfilmy dream!

Start Small

A few people have asked me if I will enter politics.

There have been many religious leaders who have run for
public office.
I always give them the same answer: No.
Some people have this crazy notion that the only way
to serve the country is by becoming a Mayor or Congressman
or President.
Thats not true. You dont have to do big, dramatic
things for the country. Start small. My hero is Edwin Soriano,
one of our faithful volunteers at the Feast.
One morning, he went to withdraw money from an
ATMand he saw a lot of receipts lying on the floor. It was
dirty. He said, We can do better than this!
And what he did was very simple. He didnt wait
for the bank to solve the problem. He went to action. He
picked up the broom nearby and swept. It only took him
two minutes. After cleaning, he asked the bank why they
allowed their ATM to be dirty. The bank manager said the
trashcan was being stolen every night. But a simple gesture
created such a huge impact, and this story went viral on the
internet.
Through Edwin, people are learning that you can love
your country by doing something as simple as picking up
trash.
Alex Lacson wrote a bestselling book, 12 Little Things
