Unit Paper 3

Vulnerability

An analysis of the big idea of vulnerability and how important it is to connect this concept to

teaching in the classroom today. With all of the unfortunate horrible things happening in the news lately, I

feel it is even more important for future teachers to recognize the feelings of their students and how that

effects teaching in our day to day life. If our students feel unsafe or judged they will not be able to learn

as efficiently from us. If they feel they can be vulnerable with their art and not feel judged harshly they

will be able to learn in a safe enviornment.

Daniel Pink makes a great point in his book A Whole New Mind when he says The search for

meaning is a drive that exists in all of us- and a combination of external circumstances and internal will

can bring it to the surface. The greatest challenge in teaching is making sure you reach every student in

your classroom. One of the great things I want to do with my future students is to take a poll everyday on

how everyone is feeling before I start teaching like Professor Ward does before each of our classes. If we

can make sure to make the effort to create a safe environment for our students I believe our future

students can really grasp Vulnerability and what it means to have a partnership with learning. Our

classmates and administrators need to make it a priority that no child feels uncomfortable and that they

have a voice.
