Katherine was five when she
watched a television programme
about malaria with her mum.
Malaria is a terrible disease that
people get from small insects, like
mosquitoes. It isnt dangerous in
rich countries, but in other places
where people are poor, it kills
many children. In Africa, about
3,000 children die from malaria
every day. Mum, that isnt right!
We need to do something right
away! said Katherine. And they
did.
Katherines first idea was to make
lemonade and sell it to collect
money for the children in Africa.
Her mum said, We probably
need to do something more.
She wanted to find a way to stop
the mosquito! Katherines mum
looked online and made a great
discovery: a charity selling nets to
protect childrens beds in Africa.
These nets stop the mosquitoes
and they only cost $10 each!
Katherine and her mum were very
excited!
Together, they talked to people
in their town and around the
USA and explained things about
malaria and the children in Africa.
They showed them the bed net
and how it worked, and asked
them to give $10 to save a child.
Their talks were a great success!
In three years, they collected more
than $100,000 to buy bed nets.
They saved thousands of lives.
Katherines family were very proud
of her. One little child can bring
an amazing change, said her mum.
