WHAT IT IS

Mise en scene is everything that appears before the camera in the

arrangement of props, scenery etc. also costumes, lighting and make-up,
setting. It describes the stuff in the frame and the way it is shown and
arranged.
LIGHTING + SETTING
Low key lighting can create an unsettling and scary mood. This is usually used in
the horror genre.
High key lighting is used to connote happiness and usually seen in comedies and
romantic films.
The setting tells the audience where they are and is essential for setting the tone
of the story and building the foundation blocks of the narrative.

COMPOSITION
The arrangement and organization of objects within the frame i.e. balance, light,
shade, colour etc.
Another way people explore how space is used within a frame is by looking at the
camera angles of an image that is shot.
COMPOSITIONAL BALANCE
The rule of thirds is often used. The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject
with the guide lines and their intersection points. Sometimes the rule of thirds is
broken, this creates suspense because when you see negative balance the mind
wants to fix it so when a resolution happens the audience feels relief.
Deep space composition is used in a film when significant elements of an image are
positioned both near to and distant from the camera to emphasize depth.
