Feminism

Information
• The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the
sexes.
• Movements started in the early 20th century – suffragettes.
• Many people dislike being labelled as a feminist because of the image
society has created for it. People think that feminists hate men and
never shave their legs and are horrible people, however that is not
the case.
History
• Suffragettes – violent
• Suffragists – non-violent
• Birth control pill in 1960s , women had more choice
• Germaine Greer was a big feminist in the 60s, but now she’s viewed
negatively by many because she now has been saying some horrible
things about transgender people and the LGBT community.
Important people
• Emily Davison – died by jumping/falling in front of the kings horse
• Emmeline Pankhurst – leader of the suffragettes
• Millicent faucet – leader of suffragists

Van Zoonen
• Van Zoonen believes the media portray images of stereotypical
women and this behaviour reinforces societal views. The media does
this because they believe it reflects dominant social values (what
people believe in) and male producers are influenced by this. This is a
patriarchy (a society ran by men for men) which dominates and
oppresses women.
