THE TEMPERATURE CONCEPT AND MEASUREMENT

Prepared by: Mauricio Snchez. Semester 2014-2

Objective: to understand the temperature concept and to know the importance of the variable in industrial
processes. To know the most common instruments to measure temperature and its characteristics.

Temperature concept

What is temperature? Discuss by groups and write a short and clear definition built by consensus

How can you measure a temperature difference between two systems (metal and wood or ceramic) with
your body, that is, without an instrument? Explain it. What part of your body acts as the sensor?

Temperature measurement

Explanation about temperature scales and measurement devices and characteristics.

Industrial Importance of temperature.
Put into a couple beakers filled with water a drop of a dye. Take care not to touch the beakers. Write the
observations in detail.

Measure the temperature of each beaker with a thermometer. How can you explain the temperature
concept according the observations?

Measure de temperature change and time when pass three sensors from a beaker to another by three
times. One of those is taken as reference. Determine exactitude, precision, range, response time. Write
your observations and discussed around the results.

Two examples of temperature (high and low) effects or applications from daily life and industrial
processes are:

To review at home

Explain how, each of the following Instruments, works:

Fluid thermometer, Thermocouple, Bimetallic, IR, RTD.

Convert 100C to F and K and 273.15 K to C and R

Convert a temperature change of 100C to K and F
Convert a temperature change of 50R to C and F

Sketch the different temperatures scales and its equivalence

What are the temperature scales and units?

Is there another temperature scale different from those treated here? How does it function? Examples.
Review some concepts: exactitude, precision, range, response time and give examples of those.
