National Structural Code

There are different approaches when it comes to approximate analysis of structures, but the easiest way
to have approximate values of the moments and shears of structural members is by using the formulas
given by the Nationla Structural Code. These formulas can be use as an alternative to frame analysis for
BEAMS and ONE-WAY SLABS only (NSCP page 4-38, 4-39) provided of the following conditions:

There are two or more spans.

Spans are approximately equal, wiht the larger of two adjacent spans not greater than the shorter by
more than 20%.

Loads are uniformly distributed.

Unfactored live load L, does not exceed three times unfactored dead load, D.

Members are prismatic.

POSITIVE MOMENT:

End spans

discontinuous end unrestrained wulu2/11

discontinuous end integral with support - wulu2/14

Interior spans wulu2/16

NEGATIVE MOMENT:

at exterior face of first support:

two spans wulu2/9

more than two spans - wulu2/10

at other faces of interior supports wulu2/11

at faces of all supports for: slabs with spans not

exceeding 3 meters; and beams where ration of

sum of column stiffness to beam stiffness exceeds

eight at each end of the span wulu2/12

at interior face of exterior support of members

built integrally with supports:

where support is a spandrel beam - wulu2/24

where support is a column - wulu2/16

SHEAR:

at face of first interior support - 1.15wulu/2

at face of all other supports wulu/2
