Guidance to using the Technicians' Training Resources Matrix

This document is to be read in conjunction with the


Technicians' 3-Year Training Programme Overview for Managers

Generic skills
The technicians training resources matrix gives managers visibility of the skills in their teams to enable both day-to-day planning and longer term succession plann
It also provides technicians with a skills framework to enable their development and progression in the job. Each technician will have their own agreed bespoke m
training and development discussions at:

Other Uses
Although targeted at technicians, the matrix can be adapted and modified by other teams in Professional Services to identify training courses linked to the Profess
Competency Framework. These teams can add in their own bespoke training needs.
You may wish to use the matrix as a recruitment tool in conjunction with the Competency Framework and the Person Specification.

How to use the matrix


The training matrix is an Excel-based application consisting of a grid with suggested training courses down the rows. These training courses are grouped to match
Technicians' Competency Framework and include the Universitys mandatory training.

Some courses listed have reference to the core Professional Services Competencie(s) it covers these are shown on the training spreadsheet for ease of use.
If you're unsure, please contact:
Staff Learning and Development

At induction or PDR, decide with each technician which training they will need over a three year period from the lists of courses, with reference to the job descriptio
specification, Technician Competency Framework and Part B of the PDR form.

Add in additional courses/external courses as required for the role.

Cells in columns 'F' 'G' and 'H' are conditionally formatted which links a simple 1-2-3 numeric input with traffic-light indicators, details as follows:
1 = Training and/or development required (Red)
2 = Refresher training/development underway (Amber)
3 = Trained and Competent (Green)

For each course you decide a time frame for the training (red or amber) years 1, 2 or 3.
