Corrosion Prevention
Cold rolled sheet, when not adequately protected, is susceptible to corrosion, the user is advised to take the following precautions:
a. Cold rolled sheet can be ordered as follows:
i) With a rust prevention oil. The protective oil, which is used to treat rolled sheet, has a mineral oil base with resistance to corrosion, staining and emulsification. It can be removed by
using conventional hot alkaline cleaning methods or solvents. The oil is compatible with drawing compounds in common use for drawing and pressing operations.
ii) Treated with a skin passing / wet temper corrosion straining fluid. The fluid is not compatible with paint systems and can be removed by conventional hot alkaline cleaning methods or
solvents. A corrosion free strip cannot be guaranteed due to the limited corrosion protection provided.
iii) Hard, un-annealed without rust preventative oil, but with a thin layer of residual rolling oil. (Not adequate to guarantee products free from rust)
iv) Dry without any temporary surface corrosion protection and no guarantee against corrosion is provided.
b. Store the sheet under low humidity (less than 40%) and constant temperature conditions. High humidity accelerates corrosion. stagnant air, which is subjected to changes in
temperature, precipitates moisture and consequently, corrosion of the sheet takes place.
c. If it is impossible to control humidity or temperature or temperature, the sheet must be stored where good air circulation exists.
d. When bundles of coils have been opened the material must be used with a minimum of delay.
e. In the event of material coming into direct contact with water, it should be treated with an approved dewatering oil and used as soon as possible.
Available SurfaceTextures:
a. Smooth (plating application)
It is suitable for electroplated articles and also for re-looing when a matt texture is undesirable. A maximum surface roughness of 0.5 micrometers centre line average (CLA) is aimed f
or, typical applications are car bumpers, door locks and other electroplated articles.
b. Light matt (drawing and pressing applications)
This surface is characterised by a fine, closely packed sharp texture. A surface roughness of 0.60 - 1.25 micrometers centre line average (CLA) and 100 peaks per inch (PPI) minimum is
aimed for. Typical applications are automobile panels.
c. Medium matt (drawing and pressing applications)
A surface roughness of 0.8 - 1.6 micrometers centre line average (CLA) and 100 peaks per inch (PPI) minimum is aimed for. Typical applications are drum bodies and ends.
d. Normal (general applications)
A surface roughness of 0.8 - 2.0 micrometers centre line average (CLA) and 90 peaks per inch (PPI) minimum is aimed for. Typical applications are steel furniture and general sheet
metal work.
e. Matt (drawing and pressing applications)
The surface texture relatively rough to ensure lubricant retention during drawing and pressing operations. A surface roughness of 1.2 - 2.0 micrometers centre line average (CLA) and
100 peaK per inch (PPI) minimum is aimed for. Typical applications are automobile panels, engine mountings, brackets and enamelling.
GALVANIZED SHEET
Hot-dip galvanized sheet is produced on continuous zinc coating lines from either cold rolled (thickness range
0.30 mm to 2.0 mm) or hot rolled (thickness range 2.01 mm to 3.0 mm) steel substrate, in coil. The galvanizing
process yields homogeneously zinc-coated sheet with a bright, smooth metallic finish.
The zinc coating can be supplied with a normal or flattened minimised spangle finish.
Zinc coatings of different thickness may be ordered to suit specific end-use requirements. The thickness and
type of steel substrate are selected on the grounds of mechanical and structural considerations.
The following zinc coating surface finishes may be ordered to suit specific end-use requirements:
1. Normal or Regular spangle is supplied for a wide range of applications where over-painting for
maintenance purposes may be undertaken at a later stage.
2. Flattened minimised spangle: This finish is recommended for applications where a high gloss paint finish is
required. It is available for zinc coatings of mass up to Z275, and a maximum material thickness of 1.20 mm
if passivation is required, or a maximum thickness of 1.60 mm if passivation is not required.
Please note: Lockforming quality Z275 is not a stock item and can be ordered on request (subject to leadtime
at time of enquiry).
GALVANIZED SHEET
ELECTRO-GALVANIZED SHEET
Electro-galvanised steel sheet consists of a cold rolled steel substrate coated with zinc by
electrolytic deposition on a continuous line. The electro-galvanizing process not only allows
accurate control of the thickness of the zinc coating, but also permits the coating of either one or
both sides of the sheet, and the coating of different thicknesses of zinc on the two sides of the
sheet.
Electro-galvanized steel sheet is intended for applications involving all forming, drawing, stretching
and bending processes during the manufacture of articles. A range of coating thicknesses is offered
with a corresponding increase in corrosion protection.
The maximum coating thickness is equivalent to that of a Z100 hot-dip galvanised sheet. The selection of the thickness of the zinc coating
depends on the specific requirements of the application.
Cold rolled, Hot rolled and Galvanized products are also available in coil,
cut to length, blanked or slit to specification.
SUPRASTRETCH CR 210
Cold rolled steel sheet for stretching applications. This material is recommended for applications such as
computer room floor panels in which material is stretched rather than drawn during the press forming
operations.
Welding:
This material is readily weldable. A heat input rate of 0.32 kJ/mm (aim) is recommended by AWS D1.3.
Paintability:
SUPRASTRETCH CR 210 can be painted, refer to paint manufacturers prescribed methods for pre-
treatment and application.
Corrosion prevention: Sizes available:
Unless adequately protected, cold rolled sheet is susceptible to corrosion and customers are advised to take Thickness Width
precautions. (mm) (mm)

SUPRAFORMTM340 - 600
SUPRAFORM TM is a range of high strength low alloy structural steels with improved formability.
Applications for SUPRAFORM TM:
Body and chassis components for the automotive and truck industry, bumper brackets, engine mounting
brackets and wheel centres.
Crane jibs and booms
Steel pipes for high-pressure applications
A wide variety of uses for mining equipment, rolling stock cold formed sections.
Welding: SUPRAFORM TM grades can usually be welded using any of the standard arc and resistance
welding processes without any special precautions.
The SUPRAFORM TM range consists of six grades where the TM designations relate to the minimum respective yield strengths of each grade. The
specifications for the SUPRAFORM TM range are similar to those in En10149 and the equivalent Domex steels.
Certification: Test and analysis certificates are supplied.
Chromadek
Chromadek for interior applications is available as hot dip galvanized steel sheet which is pre-painted on Arcelor Mittal Steel South Africas coil coating line
with special high quality paint coatings. Chromadek is a finished material with decorative coatings with good general abrasion resistance, but must be handled
with care to prevent damage to the coatings.
Welding: Many joining techniques are now available as alternatives to the more traditional methods. Pre-painted materials can not be welded by traditional methods
as the coatings do not conduct electricity and are damaged by heat.
Forming: Roll-forming rather than press braking is recommended for the forming of sections and components from pre-painted steel sheet, since there is less chance
of damaging the paint coating.
Packing: Protective strippable films are available when required for applications where appearance is of prime importance.
Material Specification: A classification of external and internal environments is also important in determining the more suitable material to be utilised. External
environments can vary between coastal and rural and also polluted and unpolluted. Interior environments must also be assessed because a build-up of pollutants or
Ordered Thickness: This is the steel plus zinc coating, but not paint coating i.e. 0.50 or 0.58 mm galvanized thickness.
Grade: The mechanical strength of the steel substrate is expressed as the minimum yield strength values and is measured in megapascals (MPa).
Low strength steel may be rated as ISQ 230 and as the yield strength increases, so co the values, with intermediate strength of ISQ 300 and an ISQ 550 having the
highest strength.
Span: This is the distance between the roof purlings, as recommended by the roll-former, with the values varying according to each particular profile.
Chromadek is available in 16 standard colours, branded at regular intervals - your guarantee that you are
using the genuine product backed by the experience of Arcelor Mittal South Africa. Each Chromadek sheet
