Ancillary Task Analysis

DigiPak Example 1

This is the first example of a digipak that I

am going to analyse and it is a digipak
from Rihanna's album Loud. I chose to
analyse this digipak because I believe that
Rihanna is like Lana Del Rey because
although they may not make the same
genre of music, they are both someone
that teenage girls aspire to be.
What codes and conventions are evident
within the text?
With this digipak, they are stereotypically made for teenage girls around the ages of 12-18 which means you
would expect a convention for the colour scheme. This convention would usually be bright and vibrant
colours to be used within the product which this digipak has followed as it does use bright and vibrant
colours. Also, the title of the album that the digipak is for is Loud which I believe to be a symbolic code for
how the colour schemes for the digipak are as the colours are very loud when you look at them. The digipak
itself follows Rihanna's style which is very Pop Princess and is generic for an artist doing the same style of
music to do so the digipak is not very unique within itself but the symbolic code of the digipak is symbolising
how even though it is not unique, there is nothing wrong with doing what you love and doing it in your own
way.
What meanings are being created by the
use of these codes and conventions?
With the theme of the digipak being loud as seen by the title and the loud colours that have been used, this
sends a messages to the audience that it is good to make some noise as long as you are being who you are ad
not changing your image for anyone or anything. Also, as I state on the previous slide, the symbolic code of
this entire digipak follows Rihannas style of being the Pop Princess type but it shows the audience that she
doesnt care about the judgements and she doesnt let the judgements she may receive affect her in any way
because she is still being herself despite anyway the media or anyone else may portray her and the hope she
has with this digipak may be that her fans think in the same way she does, and dont take their judgements
into account when deciding how they want to be viewed in todays society.
Digipak Example 2

The second digipak I have decided to analyse is for

Lana Del Reys album Born To Die. This is because
Lana Del Rey is the artist I have chosen to do a
music video for with her song This Is What Makes
Us Girls which is featured on the album that this
digipak is for.
Who/ What is being represented and how
are they being represented?
In this digipak Lana Del Rey is being represented standing alone and looking very strong-headed and
independent. Lana is being represented as someone can be looked up to and in the mid-shot photograph of
her, she looks very dominant and someone who leads not follows. This will be good for her audience to see
as it helps them to aspire to be like her; someone who can be herself and not follow what everyone else is
doing but instead creates her own path to follow. The colours around Lana on the digipak are light and
almost heavenly which can send a message that Lana can be very angelic and a good soul; someone to
worship which is what her fans like to do. However, although the colours are heavenly, they contradict the
title of the album which is Born To Die which sounds very dark. This could mean that although Lana is
someone for her fans to worship, she could be sinful and dark as well.
