TWS Overview

This unit was based off of the Lucy Calkin's Writing Curriculum. This was the second book within the
unit, The How To Guide For Nonfiction Writing. The unit was implemented for a second grade class at
Waterford Memorial School. The unit focus was on building students ability to write nonfiction text.
Students are working towards writing a 'book' where they teach an audience about a subject they are
experts on. The lessons consist of 15 minute mini-lessons and 35-45 minutes of Writers Workshop where
students practice the skills they learned through the mini-lesson. Students will work independently, with
partners and in small groups throughout the unit.
