Cultivating Change by Improving Leadership and Culture

Due: August 6, 2017

#1 Change

The change I hope to implement is to have all homeroom teachers contact parents (via phone call

or handwritten note) for each student two times per trimester expressing positive behavior

choices. This would be documented on a communication log and then used for

teacher/administrative discussion and evaluation. We already have a PBIS program in place, but

needs to be reviewed to ensure consistency and effectiveness. This can be justified as we look for

ways to recognize positive behavior choices within our school. I have a PowerPoint showing the

evidence of how our behavior achievement has increased since the beginning of the program. It

shows year by year statistics as well as statistics for each of our pillars.

Steps to implement change:

1) Include on August in-service agenda under HALOS program (communication)

a. This gives all faculty an idea prior to in-service of what will be discussed

(communication).

b. This establishes the beginning of the timeline to be presented (timeline).

2) During in-service, the HALOS program is discussed by all faculty and staff

(communication, people)

a. The program is reviewed of what components have been going well and

brainstorm ideas of how to make program better. (people)

b. Recognize all faculty and staff for the efforts they have made to make HALOS

program successful. (people, communication)

3) Communicate the WHY part of new change

a. As a way to make our program better, we would like to have parents know of the

positive behaviors their child has displayed. Many times a child receives a HALO

(positive behavior slip) and parents are not aware of this recognition. (people,

communication)

b. This added piece of recognition will create an increase in parent/child

conversation. Identifying doing what is right has a positive effect on the student

as well the parent. Everyone wants to feel proud of their school and this gives one

more reason of what makes our school GREAT! (people, communication)

4) Communicate the WHAT/HOW part of the new change

a. All homeroom teachers will contact parents (via phone call or handwritten note)

for each student two times per trimester sharing positive behavior choices (people,

communication, timeline).

b. Communication logs will be completed by teachers as parent contacts are made.

(people, communication)

5) Communicate the evaluation process

a. Explain communication logs will be given to administration at month end. This

will be used to invite conversation with teacher/administration. It also allows

teacher/administration to look at the data to ensure all students are being

recognized (people, communication, evaluation).

b. Explain administration will recognize teachers by handwritten notes and/or in

person thanking teacher for supporting new change (people, communication).

c. Explain communication logs will be used at the end of the trimester to track

positive behavior contacts and be used as a component of individual teacher

evaluations. (evaluation)

d. Explain if parents have not been contacted two times per trimester, there will be a

brief discussion of why this guideline was not able to be met. This is meant to

understand why the goal was not met. Was it because the faculty member did not

buy into the new change? Was the faculty member sick or out of the building?

Does a new teacher find it too overwhelming to do this responsibility? Work with

a new plan for those who need assistance in achieving this goal. (people,

communication, timeline, evaluation)

e. Explain to the faculty administration is committed to working with each

individual to help achieve this new change. End of trimester surveys will be

distributed to faculty. This will allow administration to look at the feedback

provided and share results at next scheduled in-service (people, communication).
