Exponent Rules Evaluating exponents: For the evaluating exponents packet, I was
confused at first since we were jumping from equations like (a^m)^n
to a = a 13 , so when I started on the worksheet, I was able to
3

figure out what I was doing when we wrote out the different
methods to find why 4^ 32 = 8. When I worked through the
method of writing it out, I was able to grasp the equations
better when I wrote it out as:
4^ 32 = (4^ 12 )^3
= 4^ 12 x 4^ 12 x 4^ 12
= 4 x 4 x 4
= 2 x 2 x 2
= 8
When I was able to write it out and sede each step, I felt better
and more confident in being able to solve using the equation
to solve for the problems.

Exponent Rules and Practice: When it came time for our exponent
rules and practice, I felt more confident and motivated especially
since the worksheet started off with more simple problems such as
24x6
4x3 2x3 , to more complex ones like 12x6 which you solve for by
dividing 24 by 12 and then subtracting the 6 from the -8 which gives
you .

Exponential Growth and Exponential Growth and Decay Rate: When I went to begin this set
Decay of problems, `I felt overwhelmed at first but once I read the rules
t
and understood the equation f (t) = a b , I felt more prepared to
begin. By the time I started looking at problems like:

A coin has a value of $1.17 in 1995. Its value has been increasing
at a rate of 9% per year.
a. V (t) = 1.17(1.09) t b. V (t) = 1.17(0.91) t
I already knew the answer is A solely based on the fact that the key
factor (1.09) should show the increase since the increase is 9% a
year.

Population and Food Supply: For this problem, I slowly began to feel
more confident in myself, and using desmos made me feel better
since I had experience with the application from my tenth grade
maths class. Through this I was able to look at each problem and
figure out what pieces of the problem applied to the equations p(t)
as well as how that translated into desmos. For example, to find h(t)
translates to the equation h(t) = 8 + 0.5t , but in desmos its written as
(f 3 (x) = 8 x + 0.5 so its in the moe standard y=mx+b equation.

Forms of Exponential Forms of Exponential Expressions: In this one, I definitely felt like
Equations the previous problems in the worksheets leading up to this one
prepared me on how to structure the problems in order to solve as
well as identifying what the statements were asking of me. Now
D
when I see an equation like R(D) = 7.35 ( 12 ) 2 , I know that in order
t t
to find out if R(D) = 7.35 (0.250) and R(D) = 7.35 (0.707) are
equivalent, I have to plug in numbers like 2 to get to a answer I
feel satisfied with. In this case, with D=2, you would end up
with something like this:

D
R(D) = 7.35 ( 12 ) 2 = 3.675
R(D) = 7.35 (0.250)t = 0.42
R(D) = 7.35 (0.707)t = 3.673

t D
Here we can see that R(D) = 7.35 (0.707) and R(D) = 7.35 ( 12 ) 2
both equal 3.67 and therefore are equivalent to one another.
