Evart campaigns
to join Michigan
Main Street
program
By Alexander Sinn

EVARTThe Evart Downtown Develop-

ment Authority is seeking community sup-
port to become a Michigan Main Street, join-
ing a program to preserve the towns history
while promoting development.

Kasen Cutler, 7 months, was among the youngest trick or treaters Saturday at Reed Citys annual Halloween event. Michigan, which participates in the national
program, Evart will need to demonstrate the
support of businesses and community mem-
bers, who would volunteer to bring restora-
tion and economic vitality to Evart.
Michigan Main Street would continue eco-
nomic progress made in recent years, DDA
Director Al Weinberg said.
Theres a lot of momentum in town, he
said. Shopping numbers are up, storefronts
are being filled.
Were very confident that this strategy
will help us grow even more while still help-
ing us keep our authenticity of an historic
small town.
The city added renovations through a
grant in 2014, improving infrastructure and
adding 13 gardens and a park. Downtown
events have helped draw residents to local
businesses, Weinberg said, including an art
festival this summer and the Main Street
Fall Festival, Monster Mash and Christmas
Carnival.
The city is seeking financial pledges to
demonstrate community support, which
Weinberg said has been shown during down-
town events in the past.
We have a lot of great support from in-
dustry and private citizens, as well as busi-
nesses in town, he said.
