Prempura is a village of some 3000 people on the outskirts of Bhopal but within the Municipal Corporation

limits. It is adjacent to the Van Vihar National Park and adjoining lake where many of the major festivals now
take place. The population is diverse, and made up of retired civil servants, agricultural workers, day labourers
and many of the women work as maids. It includes a significant number of Nepalese immigrants, people from
various tribal areas, and people of varying income levels and hence formal and informal sectors of the village.
There are two private and one government school serving village children, and they also serve as feeder schools
to Battalion high school. The focus of this design and planning project was Prempura Government School and
Global Studio liaised with the NGO Muskaan to develop this project. The school has no toilets, furniture, play
equipment or shade areas and the school playground is an open defecation site.

Through a participatory process to engage school children, teachers, parents, and local constituents (older men,
young men, women), a number of hands-on education projects were implemented, as well as the development
of some mid term and longer term objectives that would improve childrens experience of school including
positive health outcomes, and assist community development. Examples of projects implemented with the
children and/or teachers and community include waste pick-up and recycling, educational murals, a slide, tree
plantings, the design of a back-pack cum seat cum writing tablet, and a womens stitching group. Local
sponsorship was sought for ongoing proposals, with the aim that there would be follow-up by MANIT students
and staff. The Prempura School film,

Schools Plus, shows this project in action.
