Grading Criteria

Unit aim: Provide students with an opportunity to develop a focused, in-depth,

understanding of the range, characteristics, complexity and contexts that define
media and communication activity. It will require the student, through exploration
and investigation to enter into a more formal dialogue of personal interrogation
and understanding designed to confirm strengths, enthusiasms and ambitions.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit the student will:

1. Understand the characteristics and context for a chosen media and

communication activity.

2. Be able to use knowledge of the characteristics and context of a media and

communication activity.

3. Be able to use evaluation in support of creative media production.

LO1.1 Research:

Analyse at least three examples of your chosen specialism across different

formats: television, online and radio. Discuss how and why different
techniques are used depending on the context.

For example, you could look at how live football matches are covered on the
different formats at the same time, or you can look at review shows after the
games (MotD, 5 live with Kelly Cates and Ian Wright, twitter reports and
updates expert analysis V supporter opinions)

1. Secondary Research Using the internet, radio and TV, research the
conventions of sports broadcasting. What is the purpose? How
interactive is it? How biased is it? The commentary, the viewer
enjoyment and viewer interaction.

- Examples Look at 3 different sports

across 3 different formats
1. Premiership football (TV, internet and
Radio - Live and review shows)
2. Cricket (TV, internet and Radio Live
and review shows)
3. American baseball (TV, internet and
Radio - Live and review shows

- How differently are they reported on?

- What techniques are used (commentators/ length of chat /
analysis of the games, viewer interaction)

2. Harvard Referencing Ensure all of your research is Harvard

Referenced. This is easiest if you complete it as you work rather than just
doing it all at the end. The more references you use, the greater the
reliability of research.
LO1.2 Propose a brief:

Based on your research from Task 1, propose a brief for a project which will
demonstrate your ability to use your specialism appropriately across three different
formats.

You will be required to create three productions, each of which should be two
minutes long.

All three productions should be focussed on one sporting event. You will need to
create a radio, television review show and online sports highlights

Your research should inform decisions such as the script, mode of address, mise-en-
scene etc.

Suggested Scenario:

Create a post-match report for the BBC for their TV

and radio broadcasts and also for their online
reports
LO2 Plan and Produce a Media Product:

You will need to produce the following for your planning

Script
Footage you will be discussing
Filmed footage
Information on guests
You will produce 3 productions (it doesnt have to be football)

2 minute studio review show: You will use the studio as your TV
broadcast you will need to set up the studio as if it were a review
show, find a back drop, introduce a game, discuss and have a panel
of experts (at least 2).
2 minute radio review show: You will use the sound room or music
studios to produce a professional radio report for 5 live. Codes and
conventions such as interviews / supporter interaction / comedy / and
banter between hosts.
2 minute highlights for the internet this will be difficult due to SKY and
TV rights over footage so you will need to FILM a sports event this
could be the college football game / rugby game / local sports team
Due to the fact this is not a premiership game you will not need 100
cameras but you will need at least 4. You will need to commentate
over the game as well.
(You may wish to join forces on this)
LO3 Evaluation:

At the end of each LO, you should be completing evaluative journal entries -
evaluating, analysing and highlighting areas for improvement.

It is extremely important that these are completed as you work and not just at
the end. Please remember to take photos during production and screenshots
as you edit. All of this will help to support what you are evaluating.

Follow the guidance available at http://thcvibe.weebly.com/lo3-be-able-to-

use-evaluation-in-support-of-creative-media-production.html to help you
through each weeks entry.
