Discussion

For this experiment we need to test the amount of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in
our water sample (lake). We add reagent as the deionized water into the water sample and
put it into COD Reactor and wait for 1 hours and 10 minute.Actually the time should be 2
hours but because we dont have enough time we decide to make it for 1 hours and 10
minute and after it complete we compare the value of cod between water sample and blank
sample .

The main reason for using the blank sample is to control the volume of organic material in
the sample. COD was carried out to measure the oxygen demand of organic compounds in
a sample of water, and we have to ensure there were no accidentally outside organic
materials added to the sample to be measured. A blank sample is created by adding the
reagents to a volume of distilled water. Both water and blank sample will be compared. The
oxygen demand for the blank sample is subtracted from the COD for the original sample to
ensure the true measurement of organic matter.

The precaution while handling this experiment is we need to make sure that while taking the
water sample using the pipette it must be no bubble and the amount of water sample is 2ml.
Then, make sure the time when the water sample is put in the cod reactor is 2 hour. Then,
before taking the water sample from the cod reactor we must wear the glove because the
tube is hot.
