of Scanners and
Reading Devices
Optical Scanners
- Light-sensing device that reads
printed text and graphics and then
translates the results into a form
the computer can process.
Optical Readers
- Device that uses a light source
to read characters, marks and
codes and then converts them into
digital data that a computer can
process.
2 technologies used:
1) OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
- read printed characters in a special
font; read thousands of documents per
minute.
2) OMR (Optical Mark Recognition)
- read hand-drawn marks
Examples: test, survey, questionnaire
Bar Code Readers
- alsocalled as bar code scanners,
optical reader that uses laser
beams to read bar codes.
*QR Code (quick response code)*
- a 2-D bar code because it
stores information in both vertical
and horizontal direction.
RFID Readers
- (Radio Frequency Identification)
uses radio signals to communicate
with a tag placed in or attached to an
object, animal or person.
- can be use as an alternative for bar
code.
Examples: checking out library books
Magstripe Readers
- (Magnetic Stripe Card Reader),
reads the magnets stripe on the
back of credit cards,
entertainment cards, bank cards,
identification cards, and other
similar cards.
MICR Readers
- (Magnetic-ink Character
Recognition), read text printed
with magnetized ink.

Example: checks
Data Collection Devices
- obtains data directly
at the location where
the transaction or
events takes place.
Basic Types Of Output
1) TEXT contains text messages,
internet messages, memos, letters,
press release, etc...
2) GRAPHICS enhances visual
appeal and convey information.
3) AUDIO musical
accompaniments and audio
clips.
4) VIDEO video clips and
video blog.
