CONCRETE (A):
concrete has a high compression strength and
is therefore able to support a large amount
of weight, as evidenced by the narrows bridge A D
pylons. The footings sit below the surface
out of sight to prevent an over use of the
material in the site.
B
TIMBER (B):
timber beams provide lateral rigidi-
ty to the fishing platform, many species of
wood are resistant to rot and can remain
submerged indefinitely without degrading. Wood C
contrasts the materiality of the bridge above
and compliments the plywood shelter.
STEEL (C):
raised above the water surface to
prevent corrosion, a steel mesh provides grip
when the platform is wet by the wake of
passing boats. The voids in the mesh also
prevent any offal/scales from building up on
the ground. Being able to see the water
below the platform provides a more intimate
sense of connection with the river.
PLYWOOD (D):
sheets of plywood bonded with fibreglass
provide a lightweight yet strong shell, similar
to the construction of many boats that will
pass under the narrows bridge.
