CONCRETE (A):
concrete has a high compression strength and
is therefore able to support a large amount
of weight, as evidenced by the narrows bridge A D
pylons. The footings sit below the surface
out of sight to prevent an over use of the
material in the site.
B
TIMBER (B):
timber beams provide lateral rigidi-
ty to the fishing platform, many species of
wood are resistant to rot and can remain
submerged indefinitely without degrading. Wood C
contrasts the materiality of the bridge above
and compliments the plywood shelter.

STEEL (C):
raised above the water surface to
prevent corrosion, a steel mesh provides grip
when the platform is wet by the wake of
passing boats. The voids in the mesh also
prevent any offal/scales from building up on
the ground. Being able to see the water
below the platform provides a more intimate
sense of connection with the river.

PLYWOOD (D):
sheets of plywood bonded with fibreglass
provide a lightweight yet strong shell, similar
to the construction of many boats that will
pass under the narrows bridge.

REPRESENTATION

The geometry of this fishing platform is

dictated by the shape of the
existing Narrows bridge pylons; the form
was created by extruding the profile of
the void between two pylons, creating a
long shelter, this same profile was then
used to inform the shape of
openings along the structure. These
openings have been aligned with the
other spaces between pylons as to not
obstruct the views across the river
under the bridge.
The platform is to be predominantly
constructed from timber and steel, with
concrete being avoided where possible
given the bridge is solely constructed
out of it. The timber and steel
combination offers an interesting
contrast to the site and will be hard
wearing.
The 90-degree curve of the platform
acts to break up the space into
separate portions while not
necessarily dividing or restricting
movement. The length of platform
parallel to the bridge is vast and open,
ideal for fishing. The perpendicular
section facing across the river can be
used to tie up a boat and the seating
on the inside of the curve will provide
a more sheltered and secluded space
where one can enjoy a book or simple
contemplation.
