Cross Culture Understanding

THE LAST SONG

A. Synopsis

This movie tell about the relationship between Father and daughter who have
breakdown communication or bad. Ronnie and Jonah (her brother) lived with her mother
that is Kim in New York. Her parent was divorce and then Her father went out to Georgia
in Tybee Island to stay in there. Since her parent divorce Ronnie always show bad attitude
with everyone include her parent, even when Julliard school wants her to come and join
with them, she rejected. Whereas she is good in playing piano, beacuse when she was child
her father often train her to learn music. But since her father leaved her, she never want to
play piano and talk even red the letters who sent by her father. Ronnie looks like hate her
father.

One day her mother bring up Ronnie and her brother, Jonah to spent summer time in
her fathers home. Jonah is very happy when he arrived in there but Ronnie is not. Her
father is very care with her but Ronnie was ignore. Day by day her attitude is bad to her
father, but he is undertstand with his daughters feeling. Her father just silent and smile.

In Georgia Ronnie meet with a man that is Will. For the first time she indifferent
with him. But Will interested with her. His intimacy started when she called Aquarium
(the place which care with animals that live in water) to save turtles egg from fox. In the
fact Will worked in there. Ronnie fall in love with Will because often meet each other. Will
often invite her to hang out and date. Because Ronnie want to share what is her feelings so
she tried to talk with her father. Then the relationship between Ronnie and her father starts
be beter.

The relationship and communication between Ronnie and her is getteing better
everyday but on Ronnies happines, she have to accept the fact that her father suffered
cancer for long time. Ronnie was very sad and also Jonah looking the condition of her
father in hospital. But her father told her that eveything will be okay. Then, her father
decided to go back to his home and just take a rest in his home.

In the other side Will felt that he got sin to Ronnies father beacuse actually Will
know that the secret behind the fire of chruch at the past. People around Georgia accuse
Steve as the impact of the fire cause he only one who in the chruch at that time. Steve do
not deny cause at that time he sleeped and when he woke up the fire happened. So, Will
asked to his friend to tell the truth, and finally his friend agree. They beg to Steve to keep
the secret and not asked to police. Suddenly, Ronnie heard what they said, she feel
dissapointment to Will because Will lhave been lied to her. Ronnie decided to ask Will go
out from his life.

Ronnie is broken heart, she cry and cry. Then, her mother come to her to pick up her
and Jonah back to New York. But Ronnie rejected, she decide to accompany her father
because she thought that she always got angry with her father so she want to change the
situation. Her mother agree and just pick up Jonah to go back.

At that night, her father is playing piano and continue her project to finish the tone
of a song. Ronnie come and looking her father. Suddenly, her fathers hand feel stiff and
got sick. Ronnie ask to her father to take a rest. For long time, finally Ronnie play piano
again and continue the song who make her father and finished it. Her father who heard the
sound of the piano that played by Ronnie really enjoyed it until Ronnie finished the tone of
a song, she realized that her father die.

Even when the chruch Ronnie ask everyone in there that she have nothing words to
tell about his father. The symbol of love that they often express is playing piano. As the
respect for his father Ronnie play piano again with the song that made by her father and
finished by her. And among people in the chruch there is Will that come. Ronnie feel happy
to see Will again. Will ask that he want to appologize and Ronnie do so. Ronnie tell that
she will continued her study in Julliard. And Will ask also to Ronnie that he will move
study to Columbia.

B. Moral Value in Film

Moral value in film The Last Song is the parents love is endless. Although your
parent disvorced but Love from both is never disvorced. Maybe you have been ever
heard ex-wife or ex-husband but in the fact there is no name ex-parent. Even when
their child is far away they always hope their children will be okay. They will be secret of
their sadness but actually thay have to do to see their children happiness.

C. The Culture in Film

Culture is the characteristics of particular group of people. Include languange,
region, social habits, music, arts. Etc. So based on the film The Last Song culture on this
film is music and arts. Because the cast as Ronnie and her father love music and often play
piano. Although, Ronnie seldom to play piano since her father go away but in the fact
Ronnie is love music. Even her father make a song to Ronnie in the end. In film her father
ask to Ronnie ... love and music will give you a happiness (01:31:09). It means that her
father wish that Ronnie will not stop to loving music. In the film her father make a design
of paint of the chruch window with Jonah until the end when her father got sick Jonah
finished the paint it. The symbol of love from Ronnies family is music and art.

D. The differences between The other culture in film and Culture in Our life
As we may know that the film of The last Song is western film. In film the setting
of place in Georgia. Ofcourse will be some different culture with culture in Indonesia. So,
I try to compare the differenciate between them.
1. Summer Time
In Film there is so me social event like Summer Time as we can see in film on
00:03:42. Many people look like enjoy and happy in that event. We think that it is one
of culture in there but different with our culture in Indonesia theres no Summer Time
like in Film people enjoy the time in the beach then dancing, playing volley beach and
so on. In Indonesia theres not a culture.

2. Introduction
In Georgia, the way introduction is simple and after that people fast to chummy. As
Ronnie and Blaze do. Blaze said to Ronnie Ok. Come with me, there are some cooler
places. (00.06.33) and when Roonie said to Will Hi, nice look I almost didnt
recognizeyou with your shirt on. (00:21:30). But in Indonesia, the way introduction is
 more complicated and after that people in Indonesia less friendly and less fast to
chummy we think.

3. Talking

In film, if someone talk to older people than them like Ronnie to her father use
languange that standar it means that less polite. Ronnie talk to her father same as to her
peer. As in film Ronnie said to her father I dont want be here (00:16:01), Are you
going to play? Because if you are, Im sleeping outside. (00:16:16), Did you go to,
like a nice guy school or something? (00:20:20), Whats with all your smilling lately?
Seriously, its creepy. (00:20:25). But in there, there is no something wrong. That is
usual thing. While in Indonesia, if someone talk to people older than them like to family
or parent there is the way to talk because in Indonesia we have learn the languange that
we must to use to our partner appropiate with their age. If we talk to people older than
us we have to use languange that be polite.

4. Date
If in Georgia is not all hangout or spending time is date. It means that, people in there
like Ronnie and Will often spending time both, hangout, talking and anything they do
both. It is not date. In film, they just date for once when Will invite Ronnie to go to
Aquarium in film do 00:34:02, and as we seen Will wrote something and asked to
Ronnie Is it A date yet?. And Ronnie answered with her gesture Maybe. But, if in
Indonesia if the girl and boy hangout both is date. It means, people in Indonesia always
think that if the girl and the boy spending time together or both however and anything
they do it is date.

5. Kissing
In film, kissing is a culture in there. Kissing is the usual thing or general. People in there
do this act to anyone and everywhere. In film the part of kissing do on 00:39:56 although
Ronnie and Will just know each other. Even Ronnies father know those fact, but her
father look likes not worried. Her father gives a joke to Ronnie and Jonah when Jonah
asked whats going on to Ronnie and her father said Your sister just got kissed
(00:41:03). But, in Indonesia kissing is not usual or intimate. People of Indonesia is the
majority of muslim so in my religion kissing is forbidden especially in the opposite sex
(man). Specially parent forbid her child to do it.
6. Gesture and Body Languange
Different country ofcourse, different culture include different gesture and body
laguange. If in Georgia the gesture maybe like this in film was do by Ronnie
(00:34:17).

But in Indonesia gesture above that someone who didnt know whats the next or
what will going in the future something like that.

7. Wedding Party
We think that in Film or in Georgia the wedding party is simple like in film on
01:07:54. The dress of the bride and coat of the bridegroom is simple. People also
who come to the wedding party using simple dress for the woman and for the man
using coat. All people enjoy the party with dancing and then the waitress and waiter
bring up the glass of drink to people in there. The situation or decoration is very
simple with outdoor. While in Indonesia, there are so many culture or habit in the
wedding party. As we may know that there are java tradition, sumatra tradition,
kalimantan tradition and so on. The wedding is more sacral. The bride and
bridegroom using the uniform aproppiate with the tradition what their choose.
People who come to the wedding using ellegant fashion. There is no dancing for all
people but all people will enjoy the party with showing the entartainment that
already exist from the couple. There are some bridesmaid for the bride. The
decoration also more unique appropiate with the tradition.

8. Helper center
In georgia if people need some help like Ronnie do when she want to bring up her
father who got sick she call 911. In film we can see and listen Ronnie said to Will
 Call 911 (01:12:46). We think that it is the right choice because when people need
help everything will hadle as soon as possibe. But, if in Indonesia if our family got
sick for the example we do not have helper center. Usually some people in here will
handle it with panic, some people does not care about what happened, and some
people just can see us from the distance.

9. Service of Doctor
We think that in hospital in Georgia, the doctor in there is kind and very friendly to
patient or all people in there. As we may see in film when the doctor asked to Ronnie
Hi, you should go home change your skin and dress (01:13:39). Then doctor sit
beside Ronnie and tell something about her father. Doctor try to make Ronnie calm
and not sad. We like the way the doctor do close with patient and all people. If
Indonesia is difficult found the friendly doctor like that. Doctor in Indonesia look
likes busy all the time and do not have time to make conversation more with all
people in a hospital. Then, many doctor is arrogant we think.

10. Funeral
In film, the process of funeral is different with in Indonesia. If in film the funeral
there is some speech from one of family like Ronnie do. Then, she play some piano
in the chruch (01:36:59). People in there like woman using dress and the man using
coat. While in our country is not like that. Specially in Indonesia the majority of
people are Muslim include us. In my religion the process Funeral there are some
steps like Jenazah dimandikan, jenazah dikafani, jenazah disolatkan, jenazah
dikuburkan. Then, people who come wear veil to woman and then use headress
cap. People also read yassin in there.

11. House design

House in Georgia is too simple and classic. Wether is it high class or economic
class. Then the things in the house just so so. In film there are some part and action
in the house like in Ronnies house (00:07:03), (01:40:08) and so on. Then, Wills
house (00:48:11). But, in Indonesia design house is symbol of class from people.
To differenciate it is high class or economic class. And the things in house of high
class usually more ellegant.
