EXPERIMENT NO: 05

DUCTILITY OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL

Introduction:

The ductility of a bituminous material is measured by the distance to which it

will elongate before breaking when two ends of briquette specimen of the material.
The test is conducted with bitumen at 25 C and the rate of pull applied is 5 cm/min.
Ductility various grades of bitumen varies from 5 to 100. For road pavement ductility
value should not be less than 50.

Apparatus:
a) Mould The mould shall be similar in design to that shown in fig-
1. Dimension shown in the figure.

Total length 7.45 to 7.55 cm

Distance between clips 2.97 to 3.03 cm
Width at mouth of clip 1.98 to 2.02 cm
Width at minimum cross section
(Halfway between clips)
Thickness throughout 0.99 to 1.01 cm

A Distance between center 111.5 mm

B Total length of briquette 74.5 to 75.5 mm
D Width at minimum cross 9.9 to 10.1 mm
T Thickness 9.9 to 10.1 mm

b) Water bath The water bath shall be maintained at the specified

test temperature, varying not more than 0.18F(0.1C) from this
temperature.
c) Testing machine
d) Thermometer

Procedure:

1. Moulding test specimen The sample was heated with care to prevent local
overheating until it had become sufficiently fluid to pour. The melted sample was
strained through a NO. 50 sieve conforming to ASTM specification E-11, for wire
cloth sieve for testing purposes, aid, after a thorough stemming pour into the mould.
The mould was assembled on a brass plate to prevent the material under test from
sticking, the surface of the plate and interior surface of the sides of the mould was
thoroughly amalgamated or coated with a mixture of glycerin and dextrin, talc or
china clay. The plate upon which the mould was placed was perfectly flat and leveled
so that the bottom surface of the mould, touch it thoroughly. In filling the mould, it
was taken care not to disarrange the parts and thus distort the briquette. In filling, the
material was poured in a thin steam back and forth from end to end of the mould until
the mould was more than level full. The mould containing the material was allowed to
cool to room temperature for a period of from 30 to 40 min and then placed in the
water bath maintained at the specified temperature of test for 30 min.
2. Keeping Specimen at Standard Temperature- The brass plate was placed and
moulded, with briquette specimen, in the water bath and kept at the specified
temperature for a period of from 85 to 95 min. Then the briquette was removed from
the plate, detached the side pieces, and immediately the briquette were tested.
3. Testing The rings were attached at each end of the clips to the pins or hooks
in the testing machine and the two clips were pulled apart at a uniform speed as
specified until the briquette ruptures. A variation of +5 percent from the speed
specified was permissible. The distance was measured in centimeters through which
the clips were pulled to produce rupture. While the test was being made, the water in
the tank of the testing machine covered the specimen both above and below it by at
least 2.5 cm and was kept continuously at the temperature specified within 0.9F
(0.5C).

Data and Calculation:

Ductility = 124 cm

Result:

Ductility of given sample is 124.00 cm.

Precautions:

-Owing to possible danger to health if mercury is handled carelessly, the following

rules should be observed at all times.
-Store the mercury in a closed jug in a cool place.
-Strictly avoid spilling any mercury.

Discussion:
The ductility of the tested bitumen is considerable good for pavement construction.
But it should be confirmed that there is no other problem to use this bitumen.
