DANNY
You cant smoke grass in school
CADY
Privilege of the professional.
Eases inhibitions. You down here
for drama?
DANNY
Yea. Are you the drama techer
CADY
and youre let me guess. Cecille
James
DANNY
No. Im, uh... Danielle Bowden.

CADY

CADY

DANNY

CADY
Im gonna gice this to you

DANNY
ow.
CADY
litlle trick I learned. Take it

DANNY
You know, when we spoke on the
phone last night? Mm-hmm. Um... you
really made sense to me and...I
thought a lot.

CADY
Those are human truths, darlin.
Thats what its all about. Thats
what we deal with here. See the
book you have, Thomas Wolfe? Its
all about self-discovery, the inner
voyage.
DANNY
I like the end where, um...Eugenes
journey...It was really, uh,
mystical, you know. And it was
almost like a pilgrimage?
CADY
Almost like a cop-out, if you ask
me. Those were the facts of Wolfes
life. The novel is what you would
call a "roman a clef. "You know
what that is?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.

DANNY
Im not sure.
CADY
Nonetheless, you cant escape your
demons just by leaving home.
Although writers do find new
freedom when they relocate abroad.
Take Henry Miller. Have you read
his trilogy? "Plexus, Nexus, and
Sexus. "

DANNY
No.
CADY
You havent read that?Youre
missin something.
DANNY
Well, you know what? I did read
Tropic of Cancer. Just parts of it
though, cause, uh... I had to
sneak it off my parents shelf, you
know? But, his descriptions are
pretty vivid, I would say.
CADY
Yeah. In one of the novels, I dont
recall which, he describes an
erection as a piece of lead with
wings on it.
DANNY
I didnt read that part.
CADY
Of course not. Youre not allowed.
Your parents dont want you to
achieve adulthood. Thats natural.
They know the pitfalls of
adulthood, all that freedom. They
know it only too well. Temptation
to stray, deflecting their guilt
and anger onto you... for a crime
thats not even a crime... for
smokin grass.
DANNY
Wh... Wait a second. Um... where
are you from?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.

CADY
Where am I from?
DANNY
Yeah.

CADY
Where do you think Im from?
DANNY
I dont know, but...

CADY
If I told you, you gonna get mad at
me?
DANNY
No.
CADY
Im from a black forest.
DANNY
Thats funny. Youre not the drama
teacher, are you?
CADY
Maybe Im the big, bad wolf.

DANNY
Um... So, youre that guy thats
been hanging around the house?
Youre the one that killed my moms
dog?

CADY
Your moms dog was killed?
DANNY
Yeah.

CADY
I didnt even know anything about
that. Thats a shame. Thats a damn
shame.

DANNY
Yes, it was.
CADY
What kind of dog was it?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 5.

DANNY
Um... I dont know. He was just...
He was fluffy and...

CADY
Fluffy?
DANNY
Mm-hmm. So you didnt do that?

CADY
Of course I didnt do that.
DANNY
Okay.

CADY
I wouldnt do that.
DANNY
So, what are you doing here then?

CADY
Well, I came to meet you, to be
honest with you.
DANNY
Why?
CADY
Cause... I wanted to meet you, see
what you were like. I see youre a
nice person. Thats all.

DANNY
Youre not gonna hurt me, are you?
CADY
No, Im not gonna hurt you at all.
Theres no hurting here, Danielle.
Tween us theres no anger...
nothin. Just a search for truth. I
mean, did you judge me, did you get
angry at me... when you caught me
smokin the grass? Hmm?
DANNY
No.
CADY
But your parents, they judged you.
They got plenty angry at you,
didnt they?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 6.

DANNY
Yeah.

CADY
Mm-hmm. They punished you for their
sins. What did they do?
DANNY
They, uh... My dad... They just
yelled a whole lot and, um... My
mom cried... and my dad said I
couldnt drive the Cherokee.
CADY
Id say they punished you for their
sins, and you resent that, and you
should resent it. But Professor
"Do-Right" has a little advice for
you. You shouldnt damn em. Dont
judge em. Just forgive em, for
they know not what they do.

DANNY
Well, um, why do you hate my
father? I dont hate him at all.
Oh, no, I pray for him. Im here to
help him. I mean, we all make
mistakes, Danielle. You and I have.
At least we try to admit it. Dont
we?
DANNY
Yeah.
CADY
Mm-hmm.
CADY
But your daddy, he dont. Every man
Carries a circle of hell around his
head like a halo. Your daddy too.
Every man... Every man... has to go
through hell to reach his paradise.
You know what paradise is?

DANNY
No.
CADY
Salvation. Cause your daddys not
happy. Your mommys not happy. And
you know what? Youre not happy.
Are you?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 7.

DANNY
No, Im not.
CADY
You thought about me last night,
didnt you?

DANNY
Um, yes, I did.
CADY
I know. You know, I think I might
have found a companion, a companion
for that long walk to the light....
Do you mind if I put my arm around
you?

DANNY
Um... Um...
CADY
Its okay.

DANNY
No, I dont mind.
CADY
Okay.

Cady zbliza si
