BALTIMORE ONWARD
Shabbat Scoop
This Shabbat turned out to be pretty relaxing! We had a few people who were not feeling great, so
they unfortunately could not attend the Onward Seminar this weekend. Even though none of our
participants went, we still heard it was fun!

Throughout the weekend, many people headed straight for the beach and tried out a few new
restaurants! There was a local Asian Noodle Bar called Zozobra that received great reviews from
many participants. There were also raving reviews about a Food Truck restaurant right by the beach!

On Friday, many of the participants got tickets for a small cruise along the coast of Tel Aviv. We had
a great view of Old Jaa and the Tel Aviv coastline. There was music, food and swimming. Everyone
who went had a great time!

Tuesday Tracking
This Tuesday we had a conflict tour. The day began in the West Bank as we heard from an Israeli
and Palestinian who are working together to create a mutual understanding between the two groups
by sharing and listening to each others perspectives. We stopped at Emek Refaim for lunch. We
ended the day by doing a bus tour of various parts around The Old City in Jerusalem, and heard
from an organization whose goal is a two-state solution.

Participant Spotlight - Jane Grant

Hi! My name is Jane Grant. In August, I will return to the University of
Maryland where I will graduate in the spring with my BS in nursing.
This summer I am interning at Reuth Medical Center, a rehabilitation
hospital, located in Tel Aviv.

While my internship played an important role in my decision to

participate in Onward, it was the opportunity to immerse myself in
Israeli culture that truly attracted me to the program. I have enjoyed
the structured educational trips and tours, and well as the chance to
explore Tel Aviv independently. For the most part, this involves
spending time at the beach, discovering dierent foods, and trying to
live as a local. I am proud to say I can successfully navigate the city
and make at least one Israeli dish.

As my time in Israel is ending, and I reflect on my summer, I am realizing that the other participants
are what have made this experience worthwhile. I hoped that spending the summer in Israel would
be life-changing, and it has. However, it hasnt been my time at internship or on tours that have
changed me, but the people I have spent those hours with. I am grateful for the friends I have made
and am excited for the remainder of the summer.

Participant Spotlight - Koby Nachenberg

My name is Koby Nachenberg and I am a rising junior at the University
of Maryland, College Park, and I am a Civil Engineering major.
Additionally, I have been interning at Hartoov Engineering LTD in Tel
Aviv and Herzliya.

Before Onward, I have been to Israel on two separate peer groups,

Birthright and Ramah Israel Seminar, but I always felt more like a
tourist and less of a real Israeli. Onward gave me the opportunity to
not only feel like a real Israeli in Tel Aviv, but I also was able to apply
what I have been learning in College Park thousands of miles away. I
felt like this internship was a great first step to get an engineering job
immediately after college.

My favorite place in Tel Aviv has to be ( The Carmel

Market). They have the best falafel and shawarma in the city and they sell the cheapest and tastiest
vegetables I have ever had. One of my favorite things to make here is a classic Israeli salad made
from cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and lemons all from the shuk. Another great thing about the
Carmel Shuk is that it is close to one of my favorite beaches in Tel Aviv. I go to the beach a few days
a week, and I love to watch the sun set in the west over the ocean.

Internship Spotlight - Jenna Miller and Miranda Klein

from Chimes Holland Center
Hi! My name is Miranda Klein and I graduated from Towson University in
May 2016 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. I plan on becoming a physical
therapist, but first wanted to explore what the profession is like in a
dierent country. Onward Israel gave me the opportunity to do this. I
liked how the program involved an extended stay in Israel, while giving
more independence and immersion in the culture than my previous trip
to Israel through Birthright.

Hi! I'm Jenna and I'm going into my senior year at the University of
Delaware. Im majoring in Cognitive Science and Psychology and
minoring in Public Health and Disability Studies. This is my third time in
Israel, and Im really grateful to be interning with Chimes Holland Center. I have learned so much
through this program, and I am excited to take everything I have learned here and apply it to my
future career.

We intern at Chimes Holland Center which is a rehabilitative daycare for toddlers ages 6 months to
3 years old. The daycare provides rehabilitative and therapeutic intervention in the early stages of
the child's development such as occupational, physical and speech therapy. There are also sensory
stimulation rooms helpful for those with visual impairments and/or autism. Chimes is under the
supervision of the ministries of welfare and social services and health in cooperation with the
municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaa. As volunteers, we have learned to properly pick up the children
according to their needs. We have also learned to feed the children which at times involves guiding
their hands to demonstrate the movement pattern. In the light room, the walls are painted black, but
there are various light fixtures for the children to focus on. The white room is padded and has a ball
pit and is used to help the children focus on a task at hand and to calm down. Some children also
require an apparatus which straps them in while standing to encourage the development of walking.
The children are also broken o into groups where they focus on their specific needs, including
language, dexterity and working with others. Even in our short time, we have seen the children
progress and grow while forming relationships with them.

Best Homemade Meal

This week, many people made delicious meals! Jenna Balk made a tasty meal for Shabbat. She had
honey glazed salmon with parsley and asparagus and homemade fries. Alex and Chase made a
great meal filled with crunch wraps, chicken parmesan, and Israeli salad hummus toast. Jenna Miller
and Jane made eggplant parmesan!
