WIDA level 4: Expanding

Purpose/Objectives: Student will write 1-2 paragraphs on the content area of science,
regarding matter. Micro-Skills: orthographic patterns, acceptable core of words and appropriate
word order patterns, acceptable grammatical systems, cohesive devices in written discourse.
Macro-Skills: Convey links and connections between events and communicate such relations as
main idea, supporting idea, new information, given information, generalization and
exemplification

Directions in the student-friendly language. (Points) You may choose one option from the
options below. Write a short response on the information given. Make sure to write in full
sentences, with a minimum of 5 sentences in each paragraph. Use different lengths of
sentences and scientific vocabulary from class. (5 points for content, 3 points for grammar, 2
points for spelling, 10 points total)

Assessment items

1. Write 2 paragraphs about a type of matter that can change states. Tell what the matter
is, explain the different states of that matter, and what makes the matter change
between states.

2. Write one paragraph explaining what a solid is. Then write one paragraph giving an
example of a solid, using the explanation you gave in the first paragraph. Use your own words.
(2 paragraphs total)

Scoring The student can receive 5 total points for content (student must show an
understanding of what he or she is writing), 3 total points for grammar, and 2 points for spelling
for a total of 10 points.
