PARTS OF A CELL

Cell Membrane - composed of double layer of phospholipids and proteins

-controls what enters or leaves the cell
Cell Wall- made of peptidoglycan in bacteria
-found in plants, fungi, and bacteria
Cytoplasm provides a medium for chemical reactions to take place; a jelly-like
substance enclosed by cell membrane
Nucleus- controls the normal activities of the cell
Nucleolus- located inside the nucleus; makes ribosmes that make proteins
Microtubules- are tubelike and made of TUBULIN
Centrioles- help to pull chromosome pairs apart opposite ends of the cell; found only in
animal cells
Mitochondrion- the powerhouseof the cell; generates ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
Rough ER- has ribosomes on its surface; makes membrane proteins and proteins for
EXPORT out of the cell
Smooth ER- lacks ribosomes on its surface; makes cell products that are used inside the
cell
Ribosome/s- the protein factories of the cell; made of proteins and rRNA
Golgi Apparatus- stacks of flattened sacs; they receive proteins made by the ER
(Endoplasmic Reticulum)
Lysosome- contains digestive enzymes; they break down food, bacteria, and worn out
cell parts for cells
Vacuole/s- fluid filled sacs for storage (present in plant cells)
Chlorplast/s- found in producers (plants); they used energy from sunlight to make own
food (glucose)
