australia-zoo.html)

A rare baby white koala has just been born in Queensland, Australia at the Australia Zoo.
Zookeepers have made it a point that this koala is female and not albino. The Australian Zoos
wildlife hospital director, Rosie Booth, has stated: 'In veterinary science it's often referred to
as the 'silvering gene' where animals are born with white or very pale fur and, just like baby
teeth, they eventually shed their baby fur and the regular adult coloration comes through. The
search has begun for a name for this koala with suggestions such as Sugar, Snow White, Pearl,
and Snowflake. This koala is one of 12 joeys born at the zoo just this season. With that being
said, koalas have been under heightened threat across the nation in recent decades due to
bushfires, disease, dog attacks and loss of habitat.
