AUDITORIUM AND ITS ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSIONS

Auditorium is the large space where audience experience the quality performer like
singing, dancing etc. Along with the performance of the person there are other factors are
equally important such as scale of the auditorium, form, quality of space and materials
used for construction.

Line, shape, form, texture, space are elements of design. They are usually applied
following set principles to make meaning.

the use of interior and exterior space in architecture is determined by the

function for which a building is meant.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM

Form is actually extension of shape. From the basic shape, a form can be
built. Square gives cube, circle translates to sphere and triangle develops into
pyramid.

Architecture is interaction of form with space. This interaction creates a character, which is
peculiar to every building. The function of a building determines the structure and to an
extent the outlook. This is why a stadium is different from a shopping plaza and a residence
different from a theatre building.

Auditorium is the part of public building where all types of people came. So before
build an auditorium its very important to understand, how that space interact to
different types of age groups. Experience of users inside the auditorium and outside
of the auditorium, thats depend upon the form, character and quality of space.

Space is that convertible element which gives character to a structure. This character
could be reflected in theatre architecture in three ways:
1. every space unit in theatre architecture should be related to each other in a
contiguous sense.
2. the visual character and the profile of a theatre building should give a clue to its
functions.
3. the space surrounding a theatre building should be related to the building in terms of
size, structure and functions.

Though some forms work better for particular types of performance, there is no ideal
shape of a theatre. There is no ideal size of a theatre. The scale of a theatre depends on
the size of the staging required by the type of performance and the number of
audience to be accommodated, with each variable influencing the other as they
change.
It is very important to any architect to express their ideas with the help of structure or the final product. Understand the difference
between expression of structure and actual behavior of structure.
1. The actual behavior of structural system depends to large extent on a loads applied, types of connections between structural
members, material strength and relative stiffness.
2. Expression of structure, on the other hand, deals with notions about structures that may have only a superficial correspondence to
the actual structure and its behavior.

If the structure grid is important to the auditorium, quality of space is also equally important to that space. It is important to
understand, how the form, textures, Colours provides the character to the building.
